David Ray Bumpurs, a hardworking man with a big heart, passed away on September 18, 2025, at the age of 66.

Services are pending.

David spent his life outdoors, doing the kind of work that built things, fixed things, and helped people. He began his career as the “cable guy,” working for Multimedia Cablevision, Cox Communications, and Blue-Sky Satellite. He later brought his skills to Martin EBY Construction, where he helped construct a variety of projects—and even lent a hand during the Spirit tornado recovery, a time when neighbors helped neighbors and David stepped up without hesitation. His final role was with Restoration and Waterproofing of Wichita, where he could often be found hanging off the side of buildings, doing what he could to keep them dry and protected. Whether it was repairing cable, building structures, or weatherproofing buildings, David took pride in a job done right.

Outside of work, David loved life in motion. He enjoyed being a state level wrestler at Wichita East High School, later playing softball with all his buddies at Linwood Park. He never passed up a chance to go fishing with his daughters, grandchildren and close friends. He was a proud loyal Dallas Cowboys fan, and enjoyed watching football games with his wife, especially Friday night lights dates. His favorite hobby was having a nice afternoon nap. He also loved John Wayne movies and music from a multitude of genres.

David Bumpurs had one of the kindest and most loving hearts. He never met a stranger, especially a stranger in need. He was the kind of person who would gladly give away his own lunch to help someone hungry. No matter where he went, it seemed someone would ask him for five dollars, and he’d give them a ten-dollar bill without hesitation. David had a gift for seeing people—not just noticing them, but truly seeing their struggles, their pain, and their humanity. Whether it was a woman with car trouble or a homeless person sitting quietly on a sidewalk, he was always ready to lend a hand. His generosity, empathy, and unwavering kindness left a lasting impact on everyone lucky enough to cross his path.

But above all, David’s greatest pride and joy was his family. Raising his two daughters was the highlight of his life, and nothing lit him up more than spending time with his grandchildren—playing, laughing, and loving them with all he had. David unconditionally loved his wife, who stood beside him through life’s many ups and downs. Their bond was a constant source of strength, comfort, and laughter.

He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, love of the outdoors, and quiet dedication to those around him.

Preceded in death by his father, David Benjamin Bumpurs.

Survived by his mother, Pamela Ann Bumpurs; wife, Amy K. Bumpurs, both of Wichita; daughters, Sierra Kae (Adam) Duncan of Brighton, CO, Vanessa Rae (Nathan) Tullis of Hutchinson, KS; grandchildren, Tatym, Arya, Ronin; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. David. A friend of over 40 years and Amy of 55. He was and always will be, as the obituary says it all, the man he was. For me, we NEVER had a cross word between us. Even when they took in my dog as I finished school in NYC, and Thunder took a bite out of Daves forearm. The real man he was speaks for itself. Hard to put into a few words about a guy like Dave. His smile, laugh and sense of humor I remember fondly. The family already knows but I will say it anyway. My heart aches for all and the love I have for each is immense. To know that now Dave is not suffering anymore is the most at peace one can feel through heartache and loss. Rest my friend, it’s your time now.

  2. David was one of the kindest and most gentle people that I ever knew. He loved his daughters with all his heart, his wonderful mother and father, and all of the dogs that the family had over the years.
He was devoted to his beautiful wife Amy and loved God.
    Rest in peace, David.
