Denise Townsley

December 16, 1966 ~ December 1, 2023
Denise Townsley, 56, Wife, Daughter, Sister, Friend, and Best Friend of all dogs, died on Friday, December 1, 2023. Funeral Service will be at 1:00 pm, Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary, Wichita, Kansas, with visitation to follow. Denise passed from injuries from a motor vehicle accident. She did not suffer. She received excellent medical care from the Wesley Medical Trauma Surgical Intensive Care Physicians, PA’s, nurses and everyone who became involved. Denise came from a loving family. She was preceded in death by brother David Sidor and by her father Joseph Sidor. She is survived by her mother Rita Sidor of Overland Park, Ks, her brother Joseph Sidor and his wife Doris, of Olathe, Ks, and by her sisters, Sharon Gould and husband Jewell of Burke, Va., Susan Dickson and husband Bert of Stanly, Ks, and Debbie Stewart and husband Lowell of Lawrence, Ks. Denise is survived by sister-in-law Tracy Townsley of Lawrence, Ks, and brother-in-law William Townsley and wife Karen of Wichita, Ks. Denise is also survived by many loved nieces and nephews from both Sidor and Townsley families, and more extended family members. Denise is survived at home by husband Channel P. Townsley, their pet Corgi Blue (4 years old), two Corgis, Doug and Rick (each 1.5 years old), turtle Myrtle (35 years old), and an almost infinite number, variety, and ages of plants Denise was propagating. Denise was raised in Kansas City. She had many memories of being cared for, and educated, for better and worse, by her older siblings; and many fond memories of exploits with her closest high school friends, many involving her VW Bug. She attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence, developing an early love for that town and school. She briefly attended Johnson County Community College, then transferred to Manhattan, Kansas, where she bought a home and began attending Kansas State University for the next several years. She loved Manhattan as much as Lawrence. During these years she met and began dating Chan. Chan began practicing law in 1993 with the Michaud, Hutton, Andersen and Fischer law firm in Wichita. Chan and Denise bought a home in Wichita that year, where they have lived together ever since. Chan and Denise were married December 31, 1994, at a small service at her sister’s home in Kansas City. In Wichita, Denise first worked at Johnson’s Garden Center, making lifelong friends with staff and customers. Then for more than twenty years Denise split her time between work at PetSmart as a Dog Trainer, and working as a Vet Assistant at “Doc” White’s Best Friends Animal Clinic, making more lifelong friends. Denise’s love of animals defined her more than any other single thing. She loved animals of every kind, but mostly dogs. Denise never met a dog that did not like her, and not many she did not like back. She read and learned about dogs her entire life, and got her own first dog Willie while in college. Throughout her life she was an especially effective dog trainer and handler, with an uncanny ability to read and communicate with dogs and their owners. She was a respected trainer and advisor. After being gifted a Corgi, those bossy little herding dogs became Denise’s focus. She started a Corgi rescue and became involved in nationwide canine rescue and transport networks. Over the years she housed, rehabilitated, trained and directly re-homed many dozens of lucky Corgis, many to neighbors and friends, but also to out-of-state-placements to Manhattan, Montecito, San Diego, and many other places. Denise shared her life and affection with her animal friends. Without a doubt Denise went directly to the Rainbow Bridge where she was met by Willie, Max, Tucker, Jamaica, Rain, Grace, Josey, Kismet, Quincy, and Kaya. Nollie followed just five days later. Denise also found time to support women’s rights, and adamantly supported the right of choice. She worked as a volunteer supporting the No Vote on August 2, 2022, and was encouraged and proud when that vote prevailed. Denise was always helpful and quick to laugh. Denise was caring and empathetic. She would help anyone in need and made friends easily. She loved music, and had a broad and deep sense of humor. Denise lived by the doctrine that kindness is everything. Denise’s recent music favorites were Chaise Lounge by Wet Leg, Stranger in a Strange Land by Margo Price, and Someone Else’s Café by the Dawes. Please take some moments to celebrate your memories of Denise. And in her spirit, always spay and neuter your pets. Charitable remembrances are encouraged to: · A Missouri Corgi Rescue, Pets Second Chance, at petssecondchance.org · A Kansas Corgi Rescue, Corgi Connection of Kansas, at corgiconnection.com · Trust Women Wichita at trustwomen.org

Denise was a gift to all 4 legged furry friends. I loved chatting with her when she was out walking her dogs or I was out walking mine. My dogs always knew she had a treat in the little treat pouch she wore. We were both laid off from jobs about the same time, she loved what she did as a vet tech, we were able to commiserate with each other and remember that we both had value. I will miss her terribly. Rest well from your labors Denise for you take all your good deeds with you. ♥️ margi, Colonel Buddy & Jett. 🦮🐾
Denise was an excellent trainer. She was always so patient with the owners & pets. When teaching a class, she would get so animated! I always teased her that I was going to video her while she was teaching. Oh, how I wish I had! She was an amazing person, good friend that touched many people & pets. I am blessed to have known her. Denise was a one of a kind person. She will be deeply missed.
Denise was an amazing woman and a true friend to all the animals. She will be dearly missed.
Denise helped us train our dog Taz; a fearful shepard mix. We couldn’t have done it without her. I knew she had a love of Corgi’s and helped rescue many of them and found them good homes. I often saw her at estate sales after she was working at KHS. She was a true lover of animals and that brought us together in friendship.
Denise was a wonderful caring person whom enjoyed working with dogs. I worked with Denise at petsmart, when she was a trainer there. She helped train our pitbull. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Denise came into my life 54 years ago, a cherub who grew to become an angel. Her enthusiasm for life was contagious; her compassion for growing things was unmatched. She cared for those pets who needed a helping hand, she lifted up families with their pets, training and healing them in her career. She took care of people in need, being the quiet helper who made a difference. Now she leaves her memory and the joy we shared to lift our spirits as we recall the good times, the family times, the love and laughter. Rest in peace now, your work here is done. We will see you in another time, another place of lasting joy.
Denise was a faithful team member at Petsmart for over 23 years. She donated her time to different animal organizations such as the Humane Society and many foster groups. Denise was extremely passionate about her job and the pets she worked with. They were all her children and each one of them was blessed because of it. She has touched the lives of countless pets & pet parents and because of her passion and dedication we have happier pets and are better people.
Denise was a dear friend, sharing our love for the Corgis and both of us dog trainers. I will miss her laugh and her stories and antidotes. She always had an answer, and then more laughs. My heart goes out to her family. I miss her, but have wonderful memories.
Denise was a great friend from high school. We ran around with a crazy bunch of girls. She loved her VW Bugs. My condolences to her husband and family. She will be missed. Much love from Beans.

Denise definitely had a gift with training dogs and people. She was a very kind and giving individual. I met Denise through KHS and happened to have a corgi of my own. I remember when KHS was doing photos at PetSmart and that year Denise brought all 8 of her corgis in. I could not believe it but our photographer got all 8 looking at the camera and of course that was with Denise’s help up by the photographer. Patience and persistence. Denise will be missed by many humans and many canines. I am quite sure she was met profoundly at the Rainbow Bridge!
When our Auntie Blanche had to go to the care center she was lonely. Denise came to visit one day and brought an adorable puppy. Auntie Blanche played with it, remembering her little dog Sugar. It so lifted her spirits she talked about it the rest of her days.
Denise was such a kind soul. In high school she was such a mellow, cool spirit! Always a little Bob Marley in the background. We both had VW Bugs and lots of shenanigans happened in those vehicles. I always felt welcomed in her home and spent a lot of time at her house as a kid. My condolences go out to her husband and family.
I knew Denise as person who loved corgis as did my daughter. As she joins my daughter who passed in 2019 I know that there are two souls in heaven now who are taking care of the Rainbow Bridge welcome gate. I join with others offering comfort to the family as they mourn her passing but celebrate the beautiful moments she provided them during her time on earth. Thank you for the amazing service which illustrated her amazing life.
I miss my friend.
I met Denise years ago when I was volunteering at KHS. Later, I adopted Barkley from her, and I enjoyed helping with her massive garage sales to benefit her rescues. Often I would run into her at Petsmart and she was always so friendly, just the kind of person you could talk with for hours. I’m grateful to have known her. Rest in peace, Denise.
I didn’t know Denise well but I was saddened to learn she had been in an accident. We moved to Wichita about 10 years ago and enrolled our shepherd/doodle mix in training at petsmart. Denise was an amazing down to earth person. Luna went through advanced training a couple of times due to bad experiences with other dogs. Denise brought Nollie in to help work with us. When my daughter rescued a greyhound who had no idea how to “sit” Denise helped us with that too. Dan got VERY good at it! I took another rescued greyhound through training with Denise as well. My daughter and her husband just got a new dog from the humane society and we are so sad that Denise can’t lend her amazing expertise this time around. She was an amazing trainer and a very special person. She is missed.
