Dennis Laird

June 11, 1948 ~ March 6, 2023
Dennis Laird, 74, died peacefully at home, March 6th, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Independence, MO June 11th, 1948, but spent most of his youth in South Haven, KS.After graduating from South Haven High School, he spent several years in college at The University of Kansas and Wichita State University. Eventually, he became a proud soldier in the United States Marine Corp and served in the reserves until 1977.He met the love of his life, Nan, in 1975 when they both were working at Union National Bank. Dennis had a passion for pursuing different interests which led him to explore many job opportunities throughout his life. He worked in banking, as a restaurant owner of Bonanza and eventually landed at The Big Tool store as a woodworking specialist for the last 18 years. Dennis had a genius IQ which led to many shenanigans throughout his life. He was the ultimate tinkerer, creator, and fixer of all things. He always had too many projects started at once, but the finished products were worth the wait. Most weekends you could find in him in his workshop working on projects, listening to conservative talk radio. As a break from his projects, he would watch his favorite action movies or read a thriller. Dennis loved with his whole heart. He nurtured a love of knowledge in his kids, grandkids, and anyone who wanted to learn. He was an avid Kansas City Chief’s fan and faithfully watched KU Men’s Basketball. He loved an ice-cold beer or frozen margarita during the day and a bourbon at night. He enjoyed spending his summers floating and grilling on the pontoon at Skiatook Lake. You could always find him a funny t-shirt representing his love for guns and America. Dennis was a proud mentor in the woodworking shop at GoCreate on the WSU campus and a member of the Sunflower Woodworkers Guild.Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, Rip and Alma Laird, and brother Donald “Rip” Laird. He is survived by his wife Nan, brother David Laird (Helen) of Tucson, AZ, daughters Shannon Patterson (Kevin), Kristi Patton (Brian), and Dotty Laird Telford (Danny), and son Chad Laird (Nicci), 13 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren, all of Wichita, KS. Rosary will be 10:00 am, Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am, both on Friday, March 10, 2023 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Please send flowers/plants to St Catherine of Siena Catholic Church or if you’d like to send a donation to St Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, in lieu of flowers, that would be appreciated as well.
I have so many great memories of Uncle Denny. He was kind of like a big brother when Debbie and I were little and stayed with us when he was on leave or going to K State and staying with us. He made me his ring bearer in his first wedding and there were so many great hunting trips. And of course a lot of great stories when Dad, Uncle David and him were talking about life in South Haven. I had so many good times with him when I was young and I wish that I could have had more than I did as an adult. Thank you for being such an important part of my life. With so much love, Kelly (Rip) Laird.
Hi Kelly,
Miss you. I remember the hunting trips you took to Haviland, Ks, to hunt pheasant. Your cousin, Josie Laird Blaser
My heart is saddened by the passing of my cousin Dennis (Denny to me). He was one of my favorite people. I am his second cousin, Josie Laid Blaser. I saw him last at my Dad’s Robert (Bob) Laird funeral in 2019 in McPherson, but we kept in touch with messaging. I will hold sweet memories of him in my heart forever. Nan, my prayers are with you and your family. 🙏❤

Love you little cousin. You will be missed but there will still be the good memories of you and all the good times with family when we were young. You are now in the loving arms of our family in heaven. Love, Hugs and Prayers to your family.

Dennis was a long time colleague and supporter of Career and Technical Education (CTE) in WPS/259 and the surrounding schools districts. For many years I relied on Dennis to provide guidance and direction for all equipment types for CTE Pathways (Construction, Manufacturing, etc). His kindness, expertise and servant’s heart was a true blessing to so many teachers and CTE Administrators like myself. On behalf of all Trade Teacher in Kansas, accept our deepest sympathy in the loss of this great man! He will be truly missed.

I worked with Dennis many years when he was in banking. His quick wit and outgoing personality made him a pleasure to work with. Condolences to Nan and family.

I’m so glad we got to know Dennis. The best neighbors (Patterson’s) brought us together. They accepted us as family. Many fun times watching KU, OSU and Chiefs games. He made the best cherry pie on his Traeger!! We will miss you Dennis! Love you forever. ❤️🤗. Keith and Beth Crow

Thank you Dennis for your service to this nation. U.S. Marine Corps and Reserves.
Dennis and I were colleagues at Union National Bank where we worked in Consumer loans and ultimately in the infancy of the credit card department. Dennis and I enjoyed the challenges involved as we managed an entirely new financial services product for the bank. We had great fun and he was such a pleasure to work beside. It was a joy to know him. Condolences to Nan and his family. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul rest in heavenly peace.
