Dona Koon, 84, retired retail customer service representative, died Monday, September 11, 2023. Memorial Service will be at 10:00 am, Friday, September 22, 2023, at Downing & Lahey West Mortuary. Dona Koon was born October 24, 1938 to the parents of Milton and Mabel Detwiler in Blackwell, Oklahoma. She married Earl August 4, 1957 where they lived on South Palisade in Wichita. Earl worked at Cessna while Dona worked at Shepler’s in the mail order department. Dona and Earl had 3 children - Susan, Pam, and Greg. They moved to Clearwater in 1972. Dona loved her family, boating, fishing, and being outdoors. And so Dona and Earl bought a house on Table Rock Lake and retired there. Dona enjoyed many hours of watching birds hit the feeders on their deck. However, Dona was not a fan of squirrels or blue jays and was known to use a BB gun to chase them off or so that was the rumor. Dona and Earl also liked to travel. They ventured to Hawaii where they took a helicopter ride over a volcano. They also traveled to Washington DC and the New England area. They even took a river cruise down the Columbia river in Oregon. But Dona’s true joy was spending many hours on Table Rock Lake whether it be fishing or dragging grandchildren on a tube or just sitting in the boat and having lunch. She enjoyed spending time on the lake with family or friends. Dona always had cookies in the cookie jar and chocolate in the candy jar for the “grandkids”. Some of the “grandkids” were a little older and bigger than you would expect. She also ran the best Bed and Breakfast on the lake. Just ask the grandkids. Hot chocolate chip pancakes in the morning were standard routine. She enjoyed watching the KC Chiefs and KU and K-state games and the KC Royals. Dona was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; and sisters, Shirley Siefert and Carolyn Renfro. Survivors include daughters, Susan (Tim) Peters, Pam Snyder; and son Greg Koon; grandchildren, Emily (Kendall) Miller, Melissa Peters, Luke Peters, Cameron (Lindsay) Snyder, Riley Snyder; sister, Norma Nestleroad. A memorial has been established with: American Lung Association, 8400 West 110th Street, Suite 130, Overland Park, KS 66210.
