Donna J. Main
88. Wichita lost a devoted citizen and long-time supporter of the community on May 25, 2017. Donna valued her fierce independence and lived on her own terms. She died living.
Donna began working for the city of Wichita in 1948. A true trailblazer, her responsibilities eventually grew to include overseeing five other women in her division. She was passionate and proud of her career and the recognition it garnered in the 1950s, when her managerial achievements were written about in the Wichita Eagle. Donna loved Wichita and expressed this love daily through her work with the city until she retired in the 1980s.
Donna was also a life-long Democrat, a passionate and feisty champion for equal rights, and a loyal member of the Sigma Phi Gamma Sorority for over sixty years. And a huge WSU Shockers fan!
In passing, Donna will be reunited with family and friends she deeply missed, including her brother Jack Main and sister Genevieve Woods, both of Wichita, who left us many years ago.
Donna leaves behind a small cast of loving family and friends while she embarks on this next journey: a niece, Janice Lee, and her former husband, Charles Lee; a great-niece, Shandy Kawabata, and her two children, Xander and Anera, all of Wichita; a great-nephew, Cody E. Lee, and his husband, Seth Stevens, of New York City; and of course, her dear Marion Grubb, of Wichita, who was her most cherished friend for life.
Aunt Donna, we will never forget you. Well think about you every time we are in Las Vegas, sip on the bubbly, and play Scrabble. We love you.
Visitation will be from 5:00 7:00 P.M., Thursday, June 1, 2017, at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary. A memorial has been established with the Kansas Humane Society, 3313 N. Hillside, Wichita, KS 67219.
