Following a long and fulfilling life, Doris Gwendolyn (Moore) Carter, age 100, died peacefully August 26, 2024, at the Presbyterian Manor in Wichita, KS. She was born October 2, 1923 in Amory, MS the daughter of William Robert Moore and Ala Arella (Edgeworth) Moore. Doris was the second of their four children. She will be greatly missed and long remembered. The Moore family moved to Apopka, FL when Doris was in seventh grade due to health of her brother, Robert. She grew up in Apopka subsequently graduating from Apopka High School, Orlando Junior College and Secretarial School of Orlando. She was later employed by Stauffer Chemical before her marriage to John Franklin Carter on October 24, 1945, at the First Methodist Church, South Apopka, FL. John, a native of Missouri, was in military training stationed near her home and was the first soldier Doris dated. He was deployed overseas serving in North Africa, Italy, France, Belgium, Germany and to Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, a total of 44 months in the Army. They corresponded regularly as possible during the war and were married one month after his return to the States first living on the Carter’s home farm near Humphreys, MO and later moving to Trenton, MO. During her 60+ years in Trenton, Doris was known for being a very strong and dedicated member in the Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Wesley Retirees, American Legion Auxiliary, Trenton Lions Club, and the Blood Bank. She and John exemplified living Christian lives by always considering and serving others with compassion in their families and community. No one was ever a stranger at their home and many times she would share or take a meal to a friend or neighbor in sickness or need. Doris was a true blessing, a supportive wife, loving mother to her children and a tireless caregiver to her in-laws, Duffy and Helen (Nellie) Carter to her own parents and to many others. Some of her many talents and activities were vegetable gardening, home canning, cooking/baking, sewing, entertaining, traveling, RV camping, attending numerous annual Army reunions of the 351st Searchlight Battalion and square dancing. In addition to the home front, Doris managed Best Abstract and Title Co. for many years and was Deputy Circuit Clerk and Recorder in Grundy County for over 8 years. Doris was raised as a southern lady with abundant social skills and good manners, always at ease in publicly speaking and conversing with and engaging others. She was also a proud member of the Daughters of the Confederacy. In October 2010, Doris moved into the Wichita Presbyterian Manor and became an active volunteer in their library, at social functions and always on call for the other residents needing assistance. She was named Volunteer of the Year 2012. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John in 2009; her siblings, brother, William MacReed Moore and wife Ann, brother, Robert Mitchell Moore and wife Mary, sister, Mary Ila Smith and husband Henry; and three great-grandchildren, David, Eve and Daniel Carter. Surviving are son, John Michael Carter (Chelle) of Wichita, KS; daughter, Rebecca Jane Mitchell (Jere) of Columbia, MO; grandchildren, Jefferson (Alexa) Mitchell of Gilbert, AZ, Wil (Malinda) Mitchell of Hallsville, MO, Duffy (Cindy) Carter of McKinney, TX, Jaclyn (Robert) McDonald of Lee’s Summit, MO; great-grandchildren, Cora Mitchell, Colorado Springs, CO, Jack Mitchell, Gilbert, AZ, Sophie Reed and Averie Mitchell, Hallsville, MO, Samson and Jonah Carter, McKinney, TX, Caleb and Kaiya McDonald, Lee’s Summit , MO; and several nieces and nephews. Doris willed her body to the University of Kansas Medical Center for advancing medical science. In lieu of flowers she suggested memorials to Good Samaritan Fund at the Presbyterian Manor, 4700 West 13th Street North, Wichita, Kansas, or BSA Pack 733, 10209 West Bella Vista, Wichita, KS 67212 or Wesley Methodist Church, 113 East 9th Street, Trenton, MO 64683. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Trenton, MO. Interment at Humphreys, MO cemetery. Services in care of Downing & Lahey West Mortuary.
