Elaine (Lewis) Hust

Elaine (Lewis) Hust, 90, of Wichita, formerly of Hobbs, NM, Roswell, NM, and Coffeyville, KS, passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2024. She was born on November 17, 1933, in Coffeyville, KS, to Guy and Zelda Lewis. She graduated from Coffeyville High School, graduated from Coffeyville Junior College, and obtained a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Pittsburg State University. After teaching for 2 years in Atchison, Kansas, Elaine moved to Idar-Oberstein, Germany. As a civilian, Elaine taught elementary school students whose parents were stationed in that area of Germany. After a year in Germany, Elaine decided to apply to teach in Hobbs, NM, as she heard the sunshine was enchanting. After moving to Hobbs, Elaine met James “Pete” Hust. They married on June 14, 1963, and had a daughter, Karen, in 1966. She remained in West Texas and southeastern New Mexico until she and Pete moved to Wichita in 2006 to be closer to their daughter and grandson. She was passionate about horses and horseback riding, as she owned several horses while living in Coffeyville. She and Pete also owned and rode horses in West Texas. Her parents preceded her in death, as did her sister, Karen Hays. Survivors include her husband, James “Pete” Hust; daughter, Karen Hust-Bonner (Carl); and grandson Timothy Bonner, all of Wichita.Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at Kechi Cemetery in Kechi, KS.The family suggests memorials may be given to Pittsburg State University, College of Education, 1701 S. Broadway St., Pittsburg, KS 66762.Services in care of Downing & Lahey East Mortuary.
She will be missed. My heart goes out to Karen and Pete. I loved her like a sister. I love you Pete.
