Upon seeing a shiny, immaculately clean convertible driving down the street with a spunky short haired lady driver you knew it was Elaine Cyphert. Elaines love for her family, cars, and ironing were some of the traits that made her unforgettable. Mary Hazel Elaine Orcutt was born in Topeka, Kansas on December 1, 1926, Elaine was the youngest of two girls. Elaine lovingly cared for her sister Mercedes Orcutt who was confined to a wheelchair most of her life. Elaine met her handsome husband, Robert Cyphert at Cathedral High School and they married in 1951. Both were supportive and loving to their five children, Ann, Brenton, Erin, Mary, and Jon. Elaine was always full of spirit, with a can-do attitude and untiring energy. Elaine was the first woman to hold a professional job at the Wichita Clinic, she was president of her college class at St. Marys in Leavenworth, Kansas, a fashion illustrator at the Wichita Beacon, a good athlete, and a Realtor for JP Weigand. No task was ever too large for Elaine to tackle. She just did what needed to be done to help meet the demands of her family. Even when Elaine couldnt drive, she was proud to own a Lexus convertible. Her car was often parked outside her room at Chaucer so she could admire it. It was always a great day when Erin would take her for a ride in her car with the top down even if it was brisk outside. There are many great stories about Elaines antics; including the time she felt sorry for a dog tied up in a yard all day. She brought him home to be our family pet. On one of her final days she told Erin, “I am dead so you may leave now.” Elaine was something else and we will remember her always for her wonderful spirit and tenacity. She had many grand puppies, grand kitties, grand horses and grand birds. Elaines attitude of “nothing is too hard to do” will impact us all for generations. She lit up the lives of her family and everyone she met. She will be missed.

  1. Dear Erin, Drew and family, We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Erin’s mother. Let the beautiful memories you have of her comfort you at this sad time. Sending prayers and hugs. 💕 Tony &Gail

  2. Ann, Erin, Mary, and Jon, There are so many memories of the Cyphert’s as our neighbors growing up on Roosevelt. The tree house, hours playing in the sand pile, and, oh, the coolest sports cars! Your mother always made us feel welcome in your home! When seeing her out and about in later years her big smile made you feel like no time had passed. All the Hughey’s send much sympathy and many prayers during this time. Roger, Barbara, Bob, Joe, and Kathy

  3. I have so many fond memories growing up as Erin’s friend and all of our good times at your Roosevelt house. I recall your Mom’s many interests and love of sporty convertibles. She seemed always willing to let us have a sleepover or other fun activity and kept the basement refrigerator stocked with ice cold Cokes. May she rest in peace. Mary Lou (Ridder) Freach
