Elmer James Gatz

Elmer James Gatz, who passed away at age 89 on June 13, 2018, loved his family. His best days were around his family. Whether it was seeing his three daughters - Kim McGuire (Gary), Pam Goseland, and Angie Overlie (Eric) - his six grandchildren - Kyle (Bridget) McGuire, Travis (Abby) McGuire, Seth Brooks, Corbin McGuire, Hannah Overlie, and Alex Overlie, or his four great-grandchildren - Kayden Brooks, Gage McGuire, Sloane McGuire, and Declan McGuire - Elmers face always lit up with joy. Elmer started his family when he married Shirley Lingle on May 31, 1957. She survives him after 61 years of marriage. Born on August 7, 1928, in McPherson to Elmer J. Gatz and Naomi Gatz, Elmer graduated from McPherson High School before earning his bachelors degree at Emporia State University. He served in the Navy for four years and then worked at Boeing for 34 years, retiring from the company in 1992. In retired life, he enjoyed his time at the local health club with friends. More than anything, he loved keeping up with his grandchildren and great-grandchildrens accomplishments. From first steps to athletic and academic achievements and career milestones, Elmer took pride in it all. Elmer is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Fritz Gatz, and his sister, Avis Johnson. Friends, family, and others who would like to celebrate his life are invited to the Memorial Service at 11 am, Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at Pilgrim Congregational Church.
