Ethel Marie Hammond Jackie Tanner
August 17, 2009
Tanner, Ethel Marie “Jackie” Hammond, passed away August 17, 2009, at Garden Terrace in Overland Park Kansas. The Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 19, at Downing Lahey Mortuary East, in Wichita KS. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 20, at Church of the Magdalen, Wichita. Jackie was born in 1916 in Watertown NY, the only daughter of Jay and Nora Traverse Hammond. After her fathers death, when she was 2, Jackie and her brother, Harold, lived with their mother in the home of her maternal grandmother until Noras marriage to William “Bim” Montondo, who remained a part of their family until his death. Jackie migrated to Wichita KS in June 1940 as the bride of Claude Gerald “Jerry” Tanner, the beginning of 59 happily married years during which they raised a son, Tom, and a daughter, Carol. Although separated by miles, the bond between Jackie, her mother and brother became an inspiration for her family. Jackie was very proud of her Irish heritage and very committed to her Catholic faith. She and Jerry were faithful parishioners at Church of the Magdalen from its inception until Jackies move to Overland Park after Jerrys passing in 1999. Needlework and neighborhood brought Jackie to Sewing Club, a joining of friends that lasted decades. She enjoyed years of seasonal employment in the toy department at Davids, and enthusiastically volunteered at the nursing home in St. Josephs Hospital for many years. But, above all, her family was her life. Her needs and wants were always secondary. Jackie was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry; her parents, Jay and Nora; her stepfather, Bim; her brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Catherine; two brothers, Walter and Robert who died in childhood; and her nephew, Mike Hammond. She will be deeply missed by her children, Tom and Jackie Tanner and Tom and Carol Sweeney; her grandchildren - Wade and Christy Bliss, Tim Sweeney, Jon and Nora Alexander, Michael and Sarah Sweeney, Ted and Shelley Sweeney; her great-grandchildren - Laken and Jake Dexter, Erin, Jeffrey, and Rachel Alexander, and Avery Sweeney; her caring nieces and nephews; extended family and many wonderful friends. The family wishes to thank the staff of Garden Terrace and Mission Springs for their loving care. The family requests no flowers and suggests donations to the Church of the Magdalen 12626 E. 21st, Wichita, 67206 or the Catholic Care Center, 6700 E. 45th N., Bel Aire, KS, 67226.

Dear Carol and Tom, We were very saddened to read of your mother’s passing in the ‘Watertown Daily Times’. We remember her as a wonderful, caring person who always managed to visit my mother, Josephine Leone, whenever she came to Watertown. We had some memorable good times with your family on Duffy Street. My mother still lives at 130 after 69 years. She is in excellent health at 93 and is still working as a seamstress three days a week. This we believe keeps her going. Please accept our deepest condolences. God bless you always. Cathleen Leone Arthur and Josephine Leone
Please accept my sympathy on the death of your mother. Even though it’s been many years I have vivid memories of being back door neighbors. Blessings to you all.
