Ferdinand Ora Andy Barger, III

Ferdinand Ora “Andy” Barger, III, mountaineer, animal lover, and accomplished conversationalist, died Friday, February 14, 2020 at the age of 65. Memorial Service will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, February 22, 2020, at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary.
Andy was born July 3, 1954 to Ferdinand Ora Barger, Jr. and Caroline Talbert Barger. Born to a military family, he spent a majority of his childhood living in exotic places such as Fargo, North Dakota and Vecinza, Italy. After his father’s passing, Andy and his family settled in Columbia, South Carolina where he attended and graduated from Dreher High School in 1972. He continued his education at Clemson University.
In 1977, he met Wendy, and the two wed in 1979. The couple had two daughters together, Daisy (Tim) Speakman and Mary Alice Barger, before moving their family from Columbia, South Carolina to Andover, Kansas. Here they welcomed their son, Padget Barger.
Andy spent much of his time engaging in scouting through Boy Scouts of America, serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 533 in Andover and even winning Scoutmaster of the Year in 2008. In addition to the passion he had for scouting, he took extreme pride in his children, and he taught them to love nature, be self-reliant, and appreciate the little things in life, like rocks and squirrels.
Anyone who knew Andy personally knew that he had a love for conversation, and he would share the best stories about his experiences hiking mountains, kayaking swamps, and working in restaurants. In addition to being survived by his loving wife of 40 years and children, he is survived by his three brothers, Watson (Catherine) Barger, Michael (Deborah) Barger, and Stephen (Erika) Barger.
Andy was a great supporter of local charities. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with: Beauties and Beasts, P.O. Box 783001, Wichita, KS 67278; The Lord’s Diner, 520 N. Broadway, Wichita, KS 67214.
Deepest sympathy, love, and prayers to all of you.

I will forever cherish the memories I shared with Andy during our time together at KMS, both professionally and personally. Andy was truly one of a kind. Remembering him for the great colleague, father, and family man that he was. Sending my deepest condolences to Wendy and the Barger family during this difficult time. Best, Scott Jabara
Andy and us adventurous old guys, shared special times in the backcountry of N.M. and CO. just a few years back. Andy’s determination was unequaled and encouraging to his hiking buddies as we learned how to fail and how to succeed in getting up and down those mountains of the Sawatch Range of central CO. The next time you gaze at the top of a tall mountain think of Andy and how he helped shape the lives of the scouts he lead as Scoutmaster and as a friend who would help and encourage others to achieve their dreams, including mine. Andy, you will be missed my friend.
My condolences go to his loved ones, I have not met Andy personally but still feels as though I did. I met Andy through work as I was his CSR at Gildan and we used to have some very interesting conversations, it always amazed me that he knew so much about my island Barbados hence we spoke about everything from history to sports and to family. One interesting conversation was one in which he called me and asked if Ramon Armstrong was related to me and I wondered how he knows Ramon who is my nephew only to find out he was reading about Barbados performance at the Pan American games. You see once Andy know your background and interest, he always looked it up through Google or where ever so he could converse with you on everything and that was once of the qualities I admired and loved about him most. He was supposed to bring his wife and come visit me in Barbados and was promising for quite some time now, up until last month we spoke about this and had our laugh about it and again he promised. He is no longer with us and will be greatly missed, we always had great conversations. Rest in peace Andy
Please accept our deepest condolences for your family’s loss.
