Gary Lee Johnson

January 1, 1953 ~ August 10, 2015
Gary Lee Johnson, was a beloved and loving father, grandfather, husband, brother, and son, and a man that meant so much to so many. He dedicated his life to helping others through the toughest struggles of their lives. He worked tirelessly to provide others with the necessary tools to fight addiction and mental illness. The son of a soldier, he had plenty of fight in him too, as evidenced by his courageous efforts in a battle versus an unbeatable cancer diagnosis. From boyish pranks at Wentworth Military School to limousines and long hair, he was a most adventurous youth that created a lifetime of stories to tell. He spent his early years traveling the country and beyond while his father served in the Army. This experience piqued his interest in history, particularly that of U.S. wars. He enjoyed collecting military paraphernalia and old vintage toys. As he grew older he graduated from Emporia State University with a degree in Psychology and married Nancy, the love of his life. They went on to raise two adoring children, Eric and Megan. Megan and her husband, Mike, blessed him with two grandchildren, Finn and Nora, that he loved immensely. He will be greatly missed because he affected so many people in such positive ways through his incredible stories and invaluable advice. Although he is gone, his spirit lives on by virtue of the values and wisdom he instilled in all of those lucky enough to be reached by his kind and giving nature. He is survived by his aforementioned wife, children, and grandchildren, along with his mother, Mary, brothers, Pete, Frank, Steve, and sister, Linda, along with countless cousins, nieces, and nephews. He will be dearly missed. Garys memorial service will be 3 p.m., Thursday, August 13, at Downing & Lahey Mortuary West. A memorial fund has been established in his honor through Wichita Childrens Home 810 N. Holyoke, Wichita, KS 67208.
