Gary was born on March 12, 1935 in Wichita, Kansas, the son of George and Corrine Pottorff. He graduated from East High School in 1952 and from Kansas State University with a Doctor Veterinary Medicine in 1959. During his time at K-State he went on a blind date and met his future wife, Jo Ann. After practicing veterinary medicine for several years in St. Louis, MO, he returned to Wichita to open Pottorff Animal Hospital.

Gary served on the Wichita School Board for 12 years. He enjoyed bike riding and for many years rode his bike from his home to his office. He especially liked the Flint Hills and enjoyed volunteering with the Symphony in the Flint Hills, the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve and Pioneer Bluffs.

Gary was an excellent cook and fixed many gourmet meals for his wife, Jo Ann.

Together they liked to travel and visited many countries.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann; sons, Mike and Greg (Karen) of Lenexa; sister, Karen Morris; nieces, Sally Wilson, Dee George (Geoff), and Lisa Fornelli (Gerald).

He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Wilson; and daughter-in-law, Debbie Fitzgerald.

Memorials have been established with: Pioneer Bluffs, 695 Kansas Highway 177, Matfield Green, KS 66862; and the Sedgwick County Zoo, 5555 W. Zoo Blvd., Wichita, KS 67212.

A very special thanks to the Larksfield staff for their loving care.

  3. My most sincere condolences to you Jo Ann.
Gary was such a nice guy and I know you will miss him❤️❤️

  4. Gary, what a guy! Always enjoyed my time with he and Jo Ann at their lovely home (along with their loving dogs) and the special culinary talents exhibited by Gary. Our legislative encounters and K-State events gave my husband Kent and I a chance to know them as a couple who truly had a special bond. Gary will be missed, but never forgotten.

  5. Gary’s gentle compassion defined his life, serving our family not only as a dedicated veterinarian to our pets but also as a guiding voice on the school board for the wider community. We will remember his kindness and steady commitment to service, which made him a respected figure and a treasured family friend. His legacy of care and thoughtful dedication will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
