Race, Grace Elizabeth, “Betty,” homemaker, died Tuesday, January 31, 2006. Memorial service 1:00 P.M., Friday at Downing and Lahey East Mortuary. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Wesley A. Race II, in 1999. Survivors include son, Wesley A. Race III of Fort Worth, TX; grandchildren; Wesley A. Race IV, Desiree J. Wilson both of Wichita, Katherine and Gary Race of Hutchinson; great-grandchildren, Amber Race, Brandon Wilson and Dallas Wilson all of Wichita and a host of friends. She was a member of East Heights United Methodist Church. Before her marriage she attended Tarkio College, modeled and taught piano and dance which continued for many years. She was a political Committee woman for years and worked as a judge at elections, she was elected as a Presidential Delegate twice. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, joining in 1948, and holding all offices. She was selected Sweetheart in 1980, and Woman of the Year in 1983. She formed the Women of the Year group in 1991. She belonged to Botanica, Twentieth Century Club, Hypatia Beta, Ambassador Ladies, V.I.P. Club and served as President of Ladies Elks, Book Marts Club and Chapter E Win P.E.O. She was active in Fox Meadows Country Club helping with swim meets and youth activities and served 16 years on the Board of Project Beauty. After her husband retired, they traveled extensively. She was an avid reader and card player. She will be missed. In lieu of flowers, memorial is to American Lung Association, 4300 S.W. Drury Lane, Topeka, KS 66604.
