Gregory Martin McHenry

Gregory Martin McHenry, 69, told his last hilariously inappropriate tale on September 5, 2015. He was born to Nelle and Robert E. McHenry in Wichita, KS on November 19, 1945. Greg owned Hillside Nursery, where he was raised and acquired his passion for horticulture. The Nursery was Gregs life. It is his greatest gift, not only to his family, but also to the entire Wichita community. Deeper than his love for Hillside Nursery, was Gregs love for his family, which he proudly declared, “his greatest accomplishment.” Greg is survived by his recently wealthy wife of 47 years, Katie; his daughters, Amanda and Kara; sons, Mark (Laurie), Matthew (Teresa), Luke (Marla); his eight grandchildren: Annie, Steven, Jackson, Sophia, Nichole, Isabelle, Esther and Milo, and two mules; brothers, Robert (Patty) McHenry, of Derby, KS, Marshall (Sue) McHenry, of Derby, KS; sister, Patricia Mitchell, of Kansas City, MO. Father Kapauns service to God and his community inspired Greg throughout his life. His legacy lives on in the landscaping of St. Joseph and St. Francis Hospitals, Exploration Place, The Downing Gorilla Forest at the Sedgwick County Zoo, and most recently, the Eisenhower Airport. Greg, as President of Hillside Nursery, was a founding member of Botanica, a proud member of the Kansas Air National Guard, and a former President of the Greater Wichita Area Nurserymans Association. Rosary, 7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 10; Funeral Mass, 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 11, both at St. Mary Catholic Church in Derby, KS. Immediately following the burial, please join the family for a celebration of Gregs life at Hillside Nursery, 2200 S. Hillside in Wichita. Memorials have been established with St. Mary Catholic Church Building Fund, 2300 E. Meadowlark, Derby, KS 67037 and Bartlett Arboretum, KS-55, Belle Plaine, KS 67013. Downing Lahey Mortuary East.
