In Loving Memory of Gretta Jo Eslinger
Gretta Jo Eslinger, also known as Jo to those close to her, or Nanny Jo to her favorite people, passed away on Thursday, January 18th, 2024. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David, just two months prior. She is survived by her three children, Kelly Lynch (Noel Betow); Tracy Eslinger; and Eric (Pam) Eslinger, as well as her four grandchildren, Meredith Lynch; Bailey (Michael) Striecher; Allie Eslinger; and Abbie (Brett) Koop, and her three great-grandchildren, Addison; Charlotte; and Austin Striecher.
Gretta Jo, born Gretta Jo Brown on August 16th, 1940, was raised in Kinsley, Kansas. It was there she found the love of her life, David Eslinger. After marrying, the couple eventually settled in Wichita, Kansas to raise their family. In addition to supporting David throughout his education and growing career, Gretta Jo dedicated herself to taking care of the home, family and countless pets that made their way into her life, whether by choice or forced by her children.
Many may not know that Gretta Jo enjoyed visiting gravesites. One of her greatest passions in life was genealogy. She spent a significant amount of time helping others discover their heritage through her research. When she wasn't immersed in genealogy, she might have been found shopping local garage sales or baking her famous chocolate chip cookies for her church, neighbors, and friends, unless David got to them first!
Above all, Gretta Jo cherished her time with her granddaughters, and made it a priority to create special memories with each of them.
Nanny Jo introduced them to her love of history by visiting Cowtown Museum and experiencing the past in a fun way; exposed them to diversity and culture while touring the Indian Center Museum and enjoying Indian Tacos; searching for treasures at garage sales; and simply crafting, playing dress-up and watching movies together.
After creating life-long memories with her granddaughters, she was blessed to spoil her great-grandchildren. She spent hours putting together care packages of treats and toys for her favorite “little people” just to make them smile. Gretta Jo will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her kind heart and dedication to family will leave a mark on the hearts she touched.
Private graveside services will be held in July. Services in care of Downing & Lahey West Mortuary.
