Harvey A. Tretbar Jr.

Tretbar, Jr., Harvey A., 58, died on April 13, 2012. Harvey was an accomplished musician, equally adept on his guitar at classical progressions and extended versions of the songs of the Grateful Dead. In his youth, he was a talented athlete. He started for the 1971 Wichita Southeast High School basketball team as a 6-1 power forward that stunned perennial power Wyandotte to win the Kansas 5A Championship. He attended the University of Kansas, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, and later Wichita State University. At KU, he participated in the Pearson Humanities Program, which led to a lifelong interest in ancient history and classical philosophy. In his later years, he was a fixture in the Wichita Pool League, and led his teams to multiple league championships. He was preceded in death by his brother, James L. Tretbar. He is survived by his parents, Harvey A. Tretbar, MD and Julia R. Tretbar; brothers William P. Tretbar of Wichita and John P. Tretbar of St. Joseph, Mo; sister Julia Margaret Tretbar of Kansas City, Mo.; nieces Alice Perry Tretbar and Ellen Beatrice Tretbar of Lawrence; nephews Alex James Tretbar of Lawrence and Jack Philip Tretbar of Prairie Village; and Nancy Goode. The family wishes to thank Patrick Wolf, MD, the staff of the Post Acute Care unit of the Catholic Care Center and Hospice Care of Kansas for their kindness, compassion and gentle care during Harveys final days. We also wish to thank Harveys many friends who accepted him as he was for who he was. Harvey struggled with mental illness throughout his adult life. Thanks to you, Harvey was able to experience some measure of the joy and fulfillment we so often take for granted. A Memorial has been established in Harveys memory at Breakthrough Club of Wichita, PO Box 47563, Wichita, Ks 67201, www.btcwichita.org. A private family service is planned.
