Helen J. Wagner

Helen J. Wagner, 93, described by her family as an amazing role model, died on October 1. She was born July 3, 1928, to Bertha (Erdman) and Hans Widericksen in Mitchell, SD. Helen grew up in a small, 2-bedroom home without indoor plumbing; however, according to her memoirs, she said “her mother worked hard and kept her little house immaculately clean against all odds of having no conveniences.” Helen’s school years were enjoyable with a group of friends that started in junior high and held together through high school and beyond. During high school Helen was a baton twirler and worked at the local Paramount Theater, which was across the street from the Scoreboard pool hall where all the boys hung out. One boy she thought was cute named Charles asked her out for a date and she gladly accepted. Later Charles asked her to marry him and join the Catholic Church. She graciously accepted both proposals and said, “she was happy to join the Catholic Church and always had a secret admiration for the Catholic kids she knew who seemed devoted to their religion.” Helen was always cordial and welcoming to people. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Throughout her life, Helen often wrote notes, letters and poems to her family always offering words of encouragement. Helen and Charles spent 73 wonderful years together dancing, golfing, and enjoying their family. Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Charles; sister, Eileen Peterson; brother, Dick Widericksen; and great-grandchild, Cassie Pellman. She is survived by her children, Mike (Candy) Wagner of Sioux Falls, SD, Mary (Pete) Majerle of Olathe, Lori (Lisa) Wagner of Lawrence, Rob (Diane) Wagner of Wichita, Rick (Vickie) Wagner of Douglass; 13 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. A private family service will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Services in care of Downing & Lahey East Mortuary.

  1. Dear Helen, Enjoy your heavenly home and rejoining Chuck. Thanks for putting up with Rob and I when we were kids and thanks for always cooking bacon and French toast for us whenever I spent the night! Yours fondly, Greg

  2. My fondest thoughts for all the Wagner family. What a hard time. Helen is a daily part of my life here in Michigan, as my cat drinks water from a bowl Helen made in a ceramics class in the late 1970s. Her small gift is a family treasure.
