Herbert Harold Benck was born on September 22, 1930 in Fairfax SD to Christian Hans Benck and Emma Bertha (Glaser). He was the fourth of four children, all boys. He entered into eternal rest on April 18, 2023 at his home in Wichita Kansas. He was 92. A Rosary of Christian Hope will be prayed at 10am on Tuesday April 25, 2023 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am, both at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 861 N. Socora St., Wichita Kansas. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery 1640 N. Maize Rd, Wichita Kansas. Herb graduated from Bloomfield Nebraska High School in 1949. He entered into the United States Air Force on January 5, 1951 and was stationed at Thule Greenland Air Base during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on August 18, 1954. He attended college at The University of Nebraska and graduated on June 6, 1959 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. During his time in college he met the love of his life, Joyce Simon, and they were married on November 23, 1957 in Lincoln NE. Shortly after being married their first of two children, Debra, was born on March 1, 1959. After graduating he was hired by The Boeing Company, Wichita Kansas, as an Engineer, where he worked for 30 years, from 1959 to 1989, and retired. Their second child, James, was born on June 21, 1960. Sadly, his wife Joyce developed uterine cancer and passed away on June 20, 1966 at the age of 31. Herb never remarried and raised his two children by himself. In his last days before his passing he said that raising his children was the greatest joy of his life. Herb’s hobbies and entertainment were golf, bowling, watching his grandsons play baseball, and in his last few years he made a lot of road trips to casinos with his son and his friend. And, of course, he was a huge Nebraska football fan! Go Big Red! Our dad got along with everyone and he was fun to be around. He was always positive; we never heard him complain. And that wasn’t easy. Life was tough back in the day. He was laid off from Boeing a couple times and had to work odd jobs to provide for his family. The most impactful decision he ever made was to commit to raise his children Catholic and take them to church every Sunday. This would be the foundation of our strong Faith in God, His son Jesus, and the hope of our eternal home in heaven to be with dad and our mother forever. Well done my good and faithful servant. • Dear Debbie, Jim and family,

I’m so very sorry for your loss. I think we always think we’ll be ready for these times, but somehow it hurls more than we had hoped. Still, what a blessing to be able to look back on our lives with our loved ones.

My heart is with you all as we can share with you our tributes to Herb, either with you in person or streaming, as the case may be.

      Love to you all.
      Shirley Anne

  2. My dad was an unselfish man. It was always about family, and never about himself. If I had one regret, it would be that I did not hug him often enough. As adults, we tend to be less affectionate. But, I believe that hugs connect us spiritually; we feel and remember the persons spirit, and not just their appearance.

  3. My sincere thanks to all my friends for their support. In the past week, since dads passing, my heart has been pierced the most over the overwhelming support, prayers, and caring I have received from my friends. Life is all about relationships. You are such a blessing to me and my family. Without you, life would not have much meaning. May the love you have given, return to you a hundred-fold.
