Herbert Van Gieson

Herbert Van Gieson, 91, was born in Wichita to Ito and Harriet (Brown) Van Gieson. He died Tuesday, May 2, 2023.He had one sibling, Eleanor, who preceded him in 2011. Herb's wife of almost 60 years, Fern Marie Van Gieson, died three weeks ago.Herb graduated from Friends University in 1954, where he met his life-long friend, Paul Kramer. Herb followed his father's footsteps and became a conscientious objector and served in Mexico and El Salvador. He earned a Masters in Social Work from the University of Kansas in 1963.Herb served veterans as a social worker with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Wichita.Herb was an avid tennis player and he won various city tournaments. He played tennis regularly, at least weekly if not daily, into his 80's. Herb was a talented musician on the guitar and banjo.A quiet person with a clever sense of humor, Herb delighted in spending time with Fern. Their partnership and dedication to one another is an inspiration.Services in care of Downing & Lahey East Mortuary.

I will always remember Herb for his love of Tennis. I will cherish his quiet demeanor and his knowledge of many things in life. I remember always looking forward to some of his homemade bread at Christmas. Most of all I will remember the love that he and Fern had for each other.
