Irene Louise (Pagenkopf) Owen

Owen, Irene Louise (Pagenkopf), born September 28, 1920, at her familys farm home six miles from Nashville, Kansas, died Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at her home in Wichita, leaving her husband of 66 years, LaRue Wilson Owen, M.D., their son and daughter Rodney and Kay; their spouses Martha Owen and Craig Kennedy; her grandchildren Jonathan, Annie, and Sophie; their spouses Julia, Rheuben, and Travis; and her great-grandchildren Lisa, Misha, and little Rheuben. She also leaves two sisters, Eleanor Mattal and Charlotte Traver, predeceased by their sisters, Hilda Hensiek and Goldie Dicke. Irene graduated a Registered Nurse from Kingman Hospital and followed that profession into the mid-1950s, when she began working in various crafts until she discovered weaving and could follow her true calling as a weaver for 35 years, exhibiting in Kansas and Nebraska, tutored by Rudy Kovacs, professor of weaving at Idaho State University. Baptized in October, 1920, at St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nashville, Kansas, she remained in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod throughout her life. Funeral service at 10:00 AM, Saturday, February 7, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Greenwich Road, Wichita. Downing Lahey Mortuary East.

LaRue and family, Irene was a lady. I knew her through weaving classes at what was then the Wichita Art Association. She learned easily it seemed and did meticulous work. She drove with me to a Kansas Weave Around meeting one time in either Great Bend or Manhattan. She is someone I will remember fondly. Carol Jones, Bel Aire
