On Tuesday, November 16, 2021, Jack G. Aring passed away at the age of 73. He was born July 5, 1948 in the country of Sweden to Otto and Nadeshda Aring. The family moved from Sweden to the United States in 1952 and resided in New York City. Jack officially became a US citizen on October 3, 1957. He married Kathleen Ann Shay on September 15, 1973. Together they hosted numerous large Christmas family gatherings in their home. He enlisted in the US Air Force and after 25 years retired with an honorable discharge. Jack was a Vietnam War veteran. After retiring from the Air Force, he served over 20 years with the Kansas Air National Guard. After leaving the Guard, he spent several years at Ryan Aviation. During his retirement years, Jack enjoyed gardening and was a voracious reader with an extensive library of books with a particular interest in history. Jack was very bright with a tremendous gift for remembering dates and events in history. He had a big smile that matched his physical size along with a booming voice. He served many years as a volunteer for Wichita Festivals where you could find him leading parades, setting up events, and serving on various committees. He had an infectious laugh and compassionate spirit. He was very generous with his time and treasure. One of his proudest moments was winning the Cherry Pie Eating Contest at a family vacation at Grand Lake. Preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Kathy; and his brother, Roomet Aring. He is survived by his brothers, Vello (Ada) Aring of Orangevale, CA, Fred (Connie) Aring of Littleton, CO; sisters, Sirje Skerbergs of New York, NY, Maili (Mike) Kern of Lockland, ME. Jack is also survived by brothers and sisters in law and numerous nieces and nephews, and his devoted and attentive caregiver for three and a half years, Willetta Jackson - his “Guardian Angel.” Viewing and Visitation will be from 9 am - 9 pm on Thursday, November 18, 2021, and from 9 am - 1 pm on Friday, November 19, 2021, at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary. Military Graveside Service will be at 2:00 pm, Friday, November 19, 2021 at Calvary Cemetery. Public may attend. A memorial has been established with Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10306.
