Jack N. Turner

Turner, Jack N., 81, former Kansas state house legislator and Wichita attorney, peacefully passed away on April 15, 2013. He was born on December 18, 1931, delivered by his grandfather, Dr. F. P. Hulen, at St. Francis Hospital. After graduating from East High School, where he was a first-string back field starter on the varsity football team, he served 4 years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Two years of that service were attached as a hospital corpsman - 2nd class to the U.S. Marine hospital corps in Japan and Korea. After the service, Jack attended Wichita University and then attended law school at Washburn University. During law school, Jack received the Cossman Award as top freshman law student, he clerked for the Attorney Generals office and was a member of the Law Review Board. In 1956 he married Marian J. Fisher. After graduating from Washburn in 1961, he started his law practice in Wichita. In 1965, Jack was elected Kansas State Representative for southeast Wichita; he served 3 two year terms. The Wichita Beacon, in reaction to Jacks decision not to run for a fourth term, headlined in a May 28, 1970 editorial it was “Some Bad News” for Wichita. In 1973 he was appointed Sedgwick County counselor and served until 1976. He retired as an attorney in 1998. He was preceded in death by his parents Pierce Turner and Faye Turner Martin; wife of 35 years and mother of his five children, Marian J. Turner; and daughter Linda K. Oliver. He is survived by his dear friend Carol Pinsker; children Sally Unruh, Frank Turner, Stephen Turner and David Turner; grandchildren Gretel Turner, Benjamin Oliver, Elisabeth Oliver, Turner Unruh, Katie Oliver and Athena Turner; sister Sharon Combs; and brother Roger Turner; LeAnn and Candice. In lieu of flowers, please provide a gift in Jacks memory to the Kansas Humane Society or a charity of your choice. Memorial Service will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the University Congregational Church, 9209 E. 29th St. N., Wichita, KS 67226. Downing Lahey Mortuary East.
