Jack Wiley Johnson, 87, passed away in the Towanda home he shared with wife, Sonya, on May 3, 2022. A longtime employee of Boeing in Wichita, Jack retired in 1995 and began fulfilling his and Sonya’s dream of living in the country, surrounded by the Kansas wildlife they both adored. Jack was a graduate of Wichita State University and a cost estimator at Boeing. But he was a farmer, naturalist, and wildlife conservationist at heart. He gave the deer, turkeys, coyotes, and catfish in his pond a safe haven in which to thrive. Jack loved to tinker with his John Deere tractor and found great peace and satisfaction in keeping his many acres mowed to perfection. Jack was an accomplished horseman and cattleman who knew the value of well-tended farm animals. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Delma and Faye Johnson of Wichita; brother, Billie Johnson of Montgomery, AL. Jack is survived by his wife, Sonya of Towanda, KS; sister, Jean (Ray) Day of Sarasota, FL; niece, Tammy Kraus of Austin, TX; nephews, Wes Johnson of Springfield, MO, Daniel Johnson of West New York, NJ, Matthew Johnson of Barringada, Guam; niece, Jeannie Doole of Newnan, GA; nephew, Michael Moore of Wichita; niece, Debra Moore of Overland Park, KS. Memorial Service will be at 10:30 am, Thursday, May 12, 2022, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church. Jack would appreciate donations be made to the Kansas Humane Society, 3313 N. Hillside, Wichita, KS 67219; and Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 1958 N. Webb, Wichita, KS 67206. Services in care of Downing & Lahey East Mortuary.

  1. Jack was the most caring and kindest man and a wonderful husband to my dear friend, Sonya. Jack always had a smile and nice comment with a big hug to match. I will miss walking the farm with him and all of his tales about the wildlife living there. Truly a loss to many of us. Jeanette Graber (Neanie to Jack.)

  2. Oh Jack! Dang it! We’re going to miss you so much. So so many memories of you and Sonya – you waiting to feed the fish til we got there so they’d be hungry and we’d catch more! Memories of fishing and eating at the pond or the lake or Ricks or Dads house or Burns or heck, we covered a lot of territory! It was so good of you to name the pond for Dad. We all and especially the kids will carry the memories of fish caught and rides on the “ mule” and all the wonderful times we got to spend with you and Sonya. You will always be a part of our family. Sonya, you know you have all our love and thoughts and prayers for strength. Jack, Godspeed, and we’ll see ya later! 🎣💐🙏❤️

  3. Some our greatest memories as a family were fishing at the Johnson’s pond. Jack and Sonia always made us feel so welcome. Thanks for our cherished memories you gave me and my family with our grandfather (Wayne Fowler) So sorry we couldn’t be there. Jack will be missed. We love you Sonia. Love the Statons

  4. Jack was one of the finest men I have ever had the privilege of knowing. He and Sonya treated us like members of their family. I will forever cherish the memories that were made out at the farm. As a kid, Jack let me swim in the horse tank, and he allowed me to roam and explore the many acres that he kept so pristine. As an adult, I got to see my son catch his first fish on his very first cast at the lake Jack proudly named in honor of his great-grandfather. My heart goes out to Sonya and Jack’s extended family. He will be missed but never forgotten. All our love, Jared, Sheena, Miles, and Ellison Fowler.

  5. My…what to say. I am so saddened but also so very grateful for the time with Jack and Sonja! We loved, loved, loved, going to their house for picnics, fishing, conversation, catching up…then more food! We will miss you terribly, Jack. But rest assured we’re here for Sonja too. Till we meet again some day… Love, Patty

  6. We’ve considered Jack and Sonya to be part of our family for a long time. Going out to their pond for family picnics has been part of going to Kansas. Then, when they named it the Wayne Fowler Lake they endeared themselves in our hearts forever! My heart is with you, Sonya, and I’m sending you strength and love. Pam
