Swenson, James “Berney”, 90, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family on Sunday, November 9, 2008. Visitation with the family, 6:00-8:00 P.M., Wednesday, November 12, Downing Lahey Mortuary West. Service, 10:00 A.M., Thursday, November 13, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. A graveside service will follow at 3:30 P.M., Walsburg Cemetery, Leonardville, KS. Berney was born at Falun, KS on May 28, 1918. He was raised at Smolan, KS, lived as a young adult in Salina, and spent the last 50 years in Wichita. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was stationed in North Africa. He retired civil service from McConnell AFB. Berney and his wife, Kathleen, were members of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Survivors: wife, Kathleen Swenson; children, Joyce Graham of Phoenix, AZ, Karen Palmateer (Marc), Dale Swenson (Roberta) all of Wichita; grandchildren include, Katie Graham, Lane and Scott Palmateer, and Neil and Amy Swenson. Memorial established with Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1101 N. River Blvd., Wichita, KS 67203. Visitation with family, 6:00-8:00 P.M., Wednesday, November 12, Downing Lahey Mortuary West

  1. Kathleen, we were very sorry to hear of Berny passing away. I would like to attend the funeral but have a dentist appointment on Thursday morning that I can’t re-schedule. You and Berny were always good friends at McConnell and we could relate to each other since we were all from northern Kansas. We know he is in a good place now and at peace.
