James "Jim" Spencer

James (Jim) Spencer died on Thursday, September 15th, 2022, at the age of 95.Jim was born on May 12th, 1927, to John (Jack) & Onalee Spencer in Council Bluffs, Iowa but spent the first 20 years of his life living in Nebraska. He spent a short time in the Navy at the end of WW2. He received a Bachelor of Mathematics degree from Sacred Heart College, and a Master of Business Administration Degree from Wichita State University. He worked at Boeing Industries as a computer engineer in Wichita Kansas for 31 years before retiring. Jim married Theresa Posch on May 22nd, 1954, at St Joseph Parish. They had 6 children whom they raised in Wichita. Jim was able to enjoy retirement by pursuing his passion of both hunting and writing. He published 11 books on training dogs for hunting. He enjoyed travels with Theresa to Vatican City on two different pilgrimages. Jim’s Catholic Faith was an ever-present part of who he was and shaped the husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather he became. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; son, John Spencer, and daughter-in-law, Linda Spencer. He is survived by his wife; Theresa Spencer; children, Theresa, Sally (Greg) Cannata, Father Robert Spencer, Shelia Spencer, and Dr. J. Patrick Spencer; 16 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. A Rosary & Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 20th, 2022, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 861 N. Socora St. Wichita, KS 67212 at 10:30 & 11:00am respectively. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Services in care of Downing & Lahey West Mortuary.

  2. I have never met Jim in person, only through his book and my dogs. I live in Canada and love working with hunting retrievers. I am training another new dog and am using his approach to hold conditioning or force breaking. What wisdom and kindness are evident in his technique. I will be forever grateful for his advice. All my kids have a copy of his book which I gave them on the arrival of their first dog. Blessings to the family.
