Janis Sue (Roth) Danders, 73, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, passed away August 31, 2018. She was a graduate of Wellington High School, received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Wichita State University and attended Northwestern University. She taught Instrumental Music in Derby and Wichita Public Schools. She performed on French Horn with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra (Fourth Horn for 40 years), the Music Theatre Wichita Orchestra (all seasons when two horns were used), the Nutcracker Ballet Orchestra (every year since the orchestra was used), The Friends University Band & Orchestra, and the Delano Band & Orchestra. She was Coordinator for the Yamaha Music School, a member of Wichita Musicians Association, and Mu Phi Epsilon Fraternity. She was a joyous soul who brought a smile to everyone who knew her. Her heart was boundless, her laugh was glorious, and her curiosity about the world was infinite. Janis was the worlds best cheerleader, confidante, the most dedicated friend; always selfless and patient, with a dash of humor and a hug you could still feel long after shed left the room! Mere words cannot express how precious she was to all of us. The world has lost a beautiful spirit. Please put your lipstick on and raise a glass to her memory tonight. She would love that. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Dennis; her children, Beckett Graham, Matt Danders, Gretchen Rumsey, Joanna Swarts; her grandchildren, August Henderson, Kale Danders, Bryce Danders, Jett Graham, Loen Henderson, Silas Henderson, Miller Swarts, Sam Rumsey; great-grandchildren, Zxander Matson, Zakary Henderson, Bryan Danders. A visitation will be held at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary, 6555 E. Central, on Tuesday, September 4, from 5:30 7:30 pm. Prayer Service Memorial will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 124 N. Douglas, on Wednesday, September 5, at 10 am. Burial will follow at Ascension Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests making a donation in her name to either the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, 225 W. Douglas Ave. #207, Wichita, KS, 67202; Music Theatre Wichita, 225 W. Douglas Ave. #202, Wichita, KS, 67202.

  1. May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

  2. Janis was my junior/senior high bff-sharing our hearts as young teenagers at Wellington High School. We laughed and cried our way through those wonderful years. She was my maid of honor and we continued to share our love of family and life over these last 55 years. She was radiant the last time I saw her as she celebrated her 50th anniversary with the love of her life and her precious children, Grands, and great Grands! She lived a beautifully love-filled life. Missing you, my friend.

  3. We love and miss you Aunt Janis, you were a bright light everytime i saw you. Tell grandma and grandpa hi from me. Much love always, Shanna

  4. I fondly remember Janiss constant smile but also her determination on those especially tough horn parts in symphony. Mostly though, I remember Janis and Dennis together. My thoughts are with Dennis and the family.

  5. Janis and I have been friends for 61 years. We were assigned lockers beside each other in the 7th grade. Thats all it took for us to become fast friends through Junior High, High School, summer music camps in Gunnison and at WSU. Janis was a talented and caring lady. My thoughts are with Denny, her children and grandchildren, Barby and Gary.

  6. Janis was a vibrant, lovely soul who enriched all our lives. She had such a generous spirit toward everyone she met. She will be greatly missed.

  7. Janis was an amazing person who was always so encouraging and positive. She was passionate about family and music! What a beautiful soul. Much love to the family.

  8. Sorry to hear of the passing of my cousin Janis. Condolences to Dennis and the children and grandchildren and to Gary Lee and Barbara. I am remembering the wonderful times we had growing up together on So. C St. in Wellington. Uncle Johnny and Aunt Olphelia will be embracing their beloved daughter as they greet her in heaven. All my love to the family, Mike.

  9. Janis was such an important part of my musical life during the 44 years I was in Wichita. She and I played in the Wichita Symphony and Music Theatre of Wichita orchestras together and I found her to always be the ‘soul of good spirit.’ Her greeting was always a cheery ‘Hi ya!’ and she would always ask if there was anything she needed to do differently to match-up with what the rest of the horn section or I was doing musically. She also was mentor and surrogate ‘Mom’ to so many of my Graduate and undergraduate students who played in the horn section. So many of them have such fond memories of their time sitting next to Janis – as do I. God speed Janis.

  10. My condolences to Dennis and the rest of the family. Janis was always a joy to be around. She had a great smile and was so dedicated in the things she was involved in. Ill miss Janis as will all her many friends.

  11. Condolences to Dennis and family of Janis. She was always a joy to be around in Music Theatre Wichita, WSO, and Newton Mid-Kansas Symphony…..a good friend to share music with. I will miss her. Love and prayers…..

  12. Janis you always had that gorgeous refreshing sincere calming smile that lit up your whole face and when you smiled I could always feel the warmth and friendship that you portrayed.
You will always remain in our daily prayers—-thank you God for sharing Janis with us!

  13. Janisue was my big sister, my best friend, and my shopping buddy. She also thought of me as one of her daughters even though I was only a little younger than her. The minute I was born she was carrying me around. Even when I grew to be almost as big as her she would try to carry me. As we grew apart she would call me often to see how I was doing and to chat. When Dean would answer the phone he would call to me, Your mom is on the phone. He wasnt teasing; it just automatically came out of his mouth that way. When I would go visit her she was always excited to see me. We had a lot of good times together and I will never forget her. I miss her so much! There is a huge hole in my .

  14. We enjoyed learning to know Janis as our daughter-in -laws mother. She was a lovely lady and we saw her express her love for her family in many ways.

  15. Janis has been a guiding angel in my life and continues to be so from her heavenly eternity. Dennis, I will keep you and your family in my prayers for your healing and well-being during these days of transition.

  16. Dear Mr. Danders & Family;

I am so sorry for the passing of Mrs. Danders.
May God comfort and strengthen you during your time of sorrow.

    Sincerely,

    Jill (Jenlink) Baker

  17. Dennis, I was shocked when I was checking the obits today for someone else and saw Janiss name and picture. You and your family have my condolences and prayer that you will feel Gods comfort during this difficult time. I remember Janis from college and even afterwards seeing her, something to do with music, of course. We always had nice chats whether it was about our work or kids or people we knew. I used to see you once in a while when you were at Curtis. You have many friends who are praying for you and your family to help you get through this time.

  20. I am a first cousin to Janis and I am deeply saddened by her passing. I will always remember the wonderful times we had growing up and enjoying our fun days we spent running around Barbs and her neighborhood playing with all the kids. She was the most caring and giving person thoughout our lives. Our Uncle Johnny and Aunt Ophelia were the most wonderful parents and Aunt and Uncle. My heartfelt condolences to her family and husband Dennis. She was so loving and had the biggest smile. They will miss her. Love to them!

  21. Janis will always be held in the hearts of family & friends. Gracious & lovely she set an example of love each day. Please know that the very love she gave is still here surrounding all who know & love her. Let that love shelter you during the time to come.
