Joe C. Magdaleno passed away January 22, 2026. Born November 2, 1925, he was 100 years old at the time of his death.

Joe was born in Wichita, attended East High and joined the US Navy during WW II. His ship, the USS Alywin, was involved in supporting the invasions of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Upon separation from the Navy in 1946, Joe spent time with his brother Tony learning the jewelry business of watch making and diamond setting at Tony’s jewelry store. Joe eventually went to work for Gaylor’s Jewelry in downtown Wichita on Douglas Street where he further developed his jewelry skills. In 1951 Joe married Socorro “Cora” Castro and they had a daughter, Diane. Joe made a huge leap when he opened his own jewelry store, Ponderosa Jewelry, on 21st Street. He worked there for many years helping scores of loyal customers with fine jewelry and watches. Joe retired and closed the store in 1992.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Cora in 2017. He is survived by his daughter, Diane Slezak and son-in-law Tom Slezak of Leawood, KS; step-grandchildren, Tom Slezak, Jr., Las Vegas, NV and Brooke Slezak, Brooklyn, NY.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I remember Joe from his days at Gaylor’s which was around the corner from where my Mom worked. I don’t think I was ever able to purchase anything from the store, but Joe was always so nice and allowed this poor teenager to window shop and dream! I did not know about his store on 21st or I might have gone to visit and purchase some nice earrings from him. Rest in peace Joe.

  2. Fair winds and following seas sailor. “Boatswain… Standby to pipe the side… Shipmate’s going Ashore…” Thank you Joe for your service to this nation. U.S. Navy, WWII.
