He was born on July 18, 1931, at home near Capron, Oklahoma on the land his grandfather homesteaded in 1893. He attended St. Gregory's Catholic High School in Shawnee, Oklahoma and graduated from Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State University) in Stillwater, with a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Engineering. On August 4, 1956, he married the love of his life, Lottie Higdon from Shawnee, Oklahoma. They moved back to the farm in Capron where they raised their five children. John's strong Catholic faith formed him and sustained him throughout his life. He was a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alva, Oklahoma and the Alva Knights of Columbus and along with his wife, taught religious education classes. When he wasn't farming or taking care of cattle, he supported his children at 4-H and FFA livestock shows, serving as scoutmaster and attending sporting events. As a grandfather, he enjoyed treating his city grandkids to campouts, cookouts, and many driving lessons in the fields and down the dirt roads. He and Lottie retired from farming in 2004 and moved to Wichita to be closer to family. They were members of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. 1. Fair winds and following seas sailor. “Boatswain… Standby to pipe the side… Shipmate’s going Ashore…” Thank you John for your service to this nation. U.S. Navy.

  2. Love the night we spoke politics on the porch at his ranch on the Family homestead. Felt like I channeled the Scripsick’s that night. Felt my family in a completely new way. It surprised me, the sense of family I felt.
