John “Jack” E. Theis, 91, died on January 9, 2025, in Wichita, KS. He was born in Nashville, Kansas to John and Ida (Schwartz) Theis, on January 10, 1933. Jack spent his early years on the family farm, developing a strong work ethic that guided him throughout his life. He briefly attended college at St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City and later joined the United States Army and served at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He met the love of his life, Serita Hardesty while attending a USO dance. The two were married for 64 years and raised five children before Serita’s passing in 2023. Jack was a devout Catholic and a founding member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church where he was actively involved in the parish community and Knights of Columbus. In his adult years, Jack further proved his dedication and hard work as he spent over 30 years working for Montgomery Elevator Co., where he was a proud member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC). Throughout his career, he formed many lifelong friendships and was deeply respected by his colleagues. He was a devoted father and took great pride in watching his children grow, succeed, and raise families of their own. The family home that Jack built with his brother, Bill, was a cherished gathering spot. For over 50 years, the home served as a central hub for many family holidays, Saturday football watch parties, and numerous celebrations; big and small. Everyone was welcome and Jack always made sure the beer fridge was full. Jack enjoyed gardening, coaching his kids’ sports, and woodworking. He took great joy in growing his large vegetable garden and sharing it with everyone. In his spare time, he could often be found in his barn, where he would tinker and craft furniture for his family, always seeking to leave a lasting, tangible legacy of his love and care. Those who knew Jack will remember his fun-loving sense of humor, his “turtle” smile, and his love of sports. His dedication to his family and faith was unwavering and he will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by his five children, Shelly (Steve) Starr, Marty (Alicia) Theis, Jamie (Donna) Theis, Sharon (Dan) Quaney, and Shirley (Pat) McMonigle; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Bill (Lois) Theis, Paul Theis, Ray Theis; and many extended family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Serita (Hardesty); his sisters, Frances Biggs, Sylvia Horsch, Oliva Hampel, Rose Ann Klausmeyer, Laverna Klausmeyer, and Lucille Hageman. Rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 645 119th St W. Wichita, KS. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 15, 2025 also at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. A private interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St Leo Church Building Fund, 8035 SW 160 Ave, Nashville, KS 67112. Services in care of Downing & Lahey West Mortuary.
