John Hurst

john hurst
John Wesley Hurst was born November 6, 1928, in Blackwell Oklahoma, to Edward A. Hurst and Velma Mae (Lesco) Hurst and left his earthly home on February 11, 2025. He grew up in a time when common sense was common. He graduated from East High School in 1946, attended Wichita University and played baseball with the Detroit Tigers farm team. John was blessed with a healthy athletic ability; he was also an avid water and snow skier. During John’s life, he seemed to always be in the hospitality business - Liquor. He opened the Lamplighter Club, Fireside Club, worked as a salesman for different Distilleries, and wholesaler; AB Sales, John owned and operated Hurst Liquor Store. He was very good with storytelling and that showed from, “ducks on the pond” and “bullpen calling” at Shocker baseball games, to the “The first thing you know” …. (if you know, you know) and almost everyone knows John only had 9 toes! And of course, his personalized business card: Purveyor of Convivial Libation Served in Original Unopened Containers. John had a love for boating, fishing, hunting, golf and riding his tractor. He loved his Country and the US military. John was active in the Wichita Ski Club, WSU alumnae Board, Wichita State Hellraisers, East Wichita Rotary, Wichita Convention and Visitors Bureau. He loved people and was always planning his next event. In his 20’s he married and had 3 children; Steve, Berry and Leslie. Then sadly divorced. He married Sherilyn M. Scheffler in 1979 and in spite of dire predictions 😊, that union lasted almost 46 years. John became Roman Catholic in 2002 and jumped into parish life wholeheartedly. He enjoyed being an usher, greeter, extraordinary minister of holy communion. and stayed active until his health slowed him down. Sir John Hurst was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus in the Columbia Assembly. Life threw John curves like it does us all. He was not a fighter, but persevered through all of life with an ability to make others laugh, as well as himself. He rarely complained, he was a kind, loving, funny, private, imperfect man, that will be missed by all who knew him. He is making us laugh and pray, and we will hold him close in our hearts. He loved God, laughing, and celebrating life. We loved him. John died at home on the “Meadow”, surrounded by Sherilyn’s love. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary McDermed and brother-in-law, Paul; sister, Dorothy Dorow and brother-in-law, Ray; nephew, Andy Dorow; sister-in-law, Dolannes (Brantner) Scheffler; father and mother-in-law, Harris Scheffler and Pauline (Bunting) Scheffler. He leaves behind his wife, Sherilyn M Hurst; sons, Steve & wife Carol Woolley; Berry Woolley; and daughter, Leslie Woolley; a large extended family, and anyone who ever laughed with him. Rosary will be at 6:30 pm, Thursday, February 20, 2025; Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am, Friday, February 21, 2025, both at Church of the Resurrection Catholic Church.
