June 20, 2025

Joseph Ruocco, 77, retired elementary teacher and business owner, died Friday, June 20, 2025.

Rosary will be at 7:00 pm, Friday, June 27, 2025, Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 am, Saturday, June 28, 2025, both at Holy Savior Catholic Church.

Joseph touched many lives in the Wichita area and beyond through his various careers and hobbies. A graduate of St. Mary of the Plains College, Joseph used his Masters in Inner City Education from St. Louis University at several Wichita public schools. Starting with 6th grade at Dunbar, he quickly moved to teaching 5th grade at Irving, Linwood, and Clark Elementaries from 1969 until his retirement in 2003.

Joseph was the owner of Rock’s Dugout Sports Cards & Memorabilia, founded in the basement Rose Bowl East Bowling Lanes in 1977. After relocating to Northrock Lanes in 2003, he continued to run the shop until he retired in 2022, selling to a long-time customer.

His conveniently located shop also allowed Joseph to pursue his passion for bowling, both bowling in several leagues and creating the Rock’s Dugout Summer League. Joseph was honored by his induction into the Wichita Bowling Hall of Fame, the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame, and the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame.

In 1991, he was officially joined in these adventures by wife Cathy and stepchildren Robert, Susan, and Ben. Joseph was also an active member of the Holy Savior Church Community, serving as a choir accompanist using his considerable guitar talent.

Joseph took on an important role as a grandfather with the arrival of his grandsons, Max and Dexter. He enjoyed spoiling both with his time, from sharing art projects or arcade trips, to being a year-round Santa giving Hot Wheels, Legos, and various treats to the boys.

Through these roles, Joseph had a tremendous impact on the Wichita community. And better, he and his wife Cathy have been surrounded by loving family and friends who have become part of his community through these experiences.

Joseph is preceded in death by his parents, Dominic and Rose Ruocco; and son, Benjamin Gatton. He is survived by his wife, Cathy Ruocco; children, Robert (Heather) Gatton, Susan (Paul) Borchardt; grandchild, Max Borchardt; daughter-in-law, Jamie Gatton; and grandchild, Dexter Gatton.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. He was my first godchild and we baptized him at the Bronx NY I was so proud to be his Godmother as I was only 18 years old I remember him well and his mom was my Godmother Blessings to his family and sending my condolences He will be missed

  2. Cathy & Family, I’m very sorry for your loss. Joe was a very kind man. I used to pick up my son from school at Central Christian and we would go over to Rock’s Dugout at least once a week. My son loved getting cards there and both Joe & Cathy were always so kind. They always gave my son a chance to win other cards on their wall. My son and I have great memories of you and your card shop. Joe will be missed but not forgotten. Praying for your peace and comfort.

  3. I am so sorry for the loss of Joe. My late husband John really admired Joe and looked forward seeing him when he could because that was the type of person Joe was. Everyone loved him. He will be missed beyond words. My love to Cathy and family.

  4. I cannot say enough good things about Joe. But something you may not know is how very well cultured he was. I gathered that quickly as I spoke with him after 6:00 Mass at Holy Savior.
I told him flat out, “You are very cultured.” He responded, “That I am.” In addition to being an educator and baseball historian, he played guitar in the Holy Savior Choir. Oh, how I would love to talk with Joe again!
Sorry, I will be out of town and miss his funeral. But I will keep him and his family in my prayers. May God bless you all!

  5. Mr. Ruocco was one of the best men I have ever known. I had the privilege of knowing him through Clark Elementary where my daughter went to school. He always had a smile ready, but did know how to be stern too. Every year he taught the kids how to stitch together a Christmas stocking of their own, and Brandi still has hers today. He was in charge of many extra school activities, and in his class, they could earn getting to go to Rock’s Dugout and work after school. Many times we went in to Rock’s, and he would always remember Brandi and me, no matter how many years apart we would see him.

He will be greatly missed by so many of us, but God got the best angel with Mr. Ruocco!

My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time and always.

  6. Words cannot express my profound sorrow at the loss of Joe. He was not only a wonderful musician at my church, Holy Savior, but also a calming presence at anything he participated in. He was such a blessing to us all, as well as his beloved wife, Kathy. Rest in Peace, dear friend.

  7. Always a pleasure to talk to….. bought and sold with Joe since the Rose Bowl East days when actually down in the dugout. Always a smile, someone I could joke around with (even when the joke was on him), just fun to be around and disclose our latest memorabilia treasures. Such a loss to the community and beyond. Prayers to Cathy and family.

  8. I met Joe in 2011 when I was just getting into collecting cards. He had a coupon in a magazine at the time. I could tell then that his shop would be great. He was such a kind and generous man and he always took care of me at Rock’s Dugout. I enjoyed coming into his shop through the years he owned the store and talking about baseball and had fun showing him the various ttms I would get in the mail, especially the Yankees ones as that was his team. Prayers to his family and he will be dearly missed

  9. Joe – you and your amazing smile and generous heartare loved much and will be missed greatly.
    Jim and Leslie

  10. I adored Joe. I met him many times in my life. Once as a child with my love of baseball cards. As an adult I was fortunate to treat him as his doctor. We loved talking about baseball and New York food. He was an amazing and kind man. I was so sad recently when he told me he had cancer. I will miss him so much. I know he touched every life he came in contact with.
