Born Joyce Marie Metzinger to Henry Herman and Dolores Theresa Metzinger of Caldwell, KS. Joyce was a graduate of Wichita State University and shared her love of children by teaching grade school in Wichita and Topeka, KS. Later she lived her passion as a writer and playwright, producing many plays around the state. She created the nonprofit organization, Signature Exploratory Theatre and Arts (SETA), promoting an introduction into and support of local talent. She used her gift of communication for community involvement and promoting changes she wanted to see. Finally, Joyce often wrote to and about those with whom she shared an immense love and devotion and gratitude. Preceded in death by her husband, Donald Markley; her parents, Henry and Dolores; her sister, Mary Francis; her brother, Mark Carroll; nephew, Aaron Metzinger; niece, Charisma Metzinger. She is survived by her two daughters, Carrie (Jeff) Moore of Kechi, and Audrey (Mike) Heiland of Wichita; grandchildren, Rhae Ann (Chris) Burt, Byron (Monica) Moore, Zach (Amanda) Heiland, all of Kansas City, KS, Nick Heiland and Tate Heiland of Wichita; great-granddaughter, Maia Tayte Burt; siblings include, Dolores Ann (Martin) Brown, Paul (Cheri) Metzinger, Dale (Alice) Metzinger, Gloria (Gene) Meyer, Marion (Virginia) Metzinger; and many nieces and nephews. Rosary will be at 4:00 pm, Sunday, August 15, 2021; Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am, Monday, August 16, 2021, both at Church of the Resurrection Catholic Church, 4910 N. Woodlawn, Bel Aire, KS. Graveside Service will be at 3:30 pm at Caldwell Cemetery, in her hometown of Caldwell, KS. Memorials have been established with: Guild Hall Players c/o St. James Episcopal Church, 3750 E. Douglas Ave., Wichita, KS 67208; or the National Indian Education Association, 1514 P St., Ste. B., Washington, DC 20005. Services in care of Downing & Lahey Mortuary - East Chapel.

  1. She was my kindergarten teacher in 1959 at Arkansas Avenue and I loved her. She instilled the love of learning in me. My deepest sympathy to her family! I know she made a great impression on me and so many other young lives. May she fly with the Angels because in my opinion she has always been one.
