Karen D. McGuigan, 79, died September 19, 2022 in Olathe, KS. She graduated from William Jewel College in Liberty, MO in 1967 and after graduation taught elementary school in St. Joseph, MO for two years. Karen’s passion for teaching and community service led her to hold several positions in the Kansas City and Wichita markets. She served as the Director of the Kaw Valley Heart Association in Kansas City, KS, and was also in charge of the Health Education Division at the Johnson County Health Department. Karen then became the Director of Fund Development at the Institute of Logopedics for two years in Wichita, KS where she often traveled to surrounding regions in western Kansas. During this time Karen was elected to President of the Fundraising Association. Karen met Jim McGuigan during her time working at the Johnson County Health Department. She married Jim, the love of her life on December 3, 1977 in Wichita, KS. Karen continued her career by championing the growth and development of girls and young women. She served for 10 years as the Executive Director at the Girl Scouts Heartland office in Wichita, KS. Karen and Jim relocated from Wichita to Kansas City in 1983. She accepted the position as Executive Director at the Girl Scouts of NE Kansas and NW Missouri office. Karen served in this position for 18 years and grew membership attendance by 10,000 within only her first year of service. Karen had a long illustrious career dedicated to serving others. After retirement Karen found artistic pleasure in oil painting and enjoyed attending sporting events supporting the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals. Preceded in death by her parents Harry Presley Kirk and Martha Alice Kirk-Spickard and brothers Harry Donald Kirk and David Scott Kirk. A memorial has been established with the Girl Scouts of NE Kansas and NW Missouri, 10561 Barkley St., Ste. 101, Overland Park, KS 66212.A celebration of life service will be held at the Santa Marta retirement facility’s chapel 13800 W 116th St, Olathe, KS 66062 on Thursday, September 29, 2022 at 10:00 am followed by a burial on Friday, September 30 at 10:00 am at Calvary Cemetery, at 610 S Vassar St, Wichita, KS 67218.
