Kenton Cox
75, architect, devoted husband, father and grandfather, beloved brother, uncle and cousin, passed away May 19, 2018. Kenton was born in Wichita, Kansas, to Frances and Harold Cox, August 30, 1942. He is survived by wife, Gloria; sons, Steven (Virginia Sosa) Cox of Uvalde, TX, Scott Cox of Henderson, NV, Chad (Emily) Cox of Wichita; brothers, David (Donna) Cox of Wichita, Dennis (Debi) Cox of Shawnee, KS, Tom (Debi) Cox of Wichita; sister, Helen “Marlene” Franklin; grandchildren, Ryan, Landon, Jason, Eleanora, Margaret and Rosemary Cox. Kenton graduated from Kansas State University with dual degrees in Architecture and Architectural Engineering. Upon graduation, he became a commissioned first lieutenant serving in Vietnam (1967-1968) where he received a Bronze Star for his outstanding leadership and bravery. Kenton was a partner in the architectural firm Schaefer, Johnson, Cox, Frey. He designed many commercial and school buildings throughout his career in Kansas and New Mexico. He worked with many superintendents and school boards helping their communities pass bond elections. Kenton became known for his school architectural work in the Maize and Derby school districts. During his tenure as bond project manager for the Wichita Public School District, Kenton was instrumental in the implementation of air conditioning and safe rooms in all Wichita Public Schools. He loved sports, was an avid Kansas State fan and he enjoyed golfing with his friends. He played North High football and was on various church sports teams, also coaching many of his sons sports. Kenton had a deep love for God. His Christian principles guided him throughout his life and career. He was a generous, kind and loving man who fought with everything he had to overcome his disease. He leaves a great legacy and he leaves a gigantic hole in the lives of his family and friends. Visitation with the family, 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, May 22; Funeral Service, 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 23, both at Pathway Church, 2001 N. Maize Road, Wichita, KS.
