Laura Roberta Cummings, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and woman of deep faith, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026. She was 93 years old.

Born on December 21, 1932, in Breckenridge, Texas, Laura was the second of six children born to Frank and Ruth Herring. The family eventually made their way to Kansas, settling first in Ellenwood before making their home in Wichita, where Laura grew up in the College Hill neighborhood. She attended Blessed Sacrament School and went on to Notre Dame de Sion High School for Girls in Kansas City, Missouri. She pursued her education at the University of Kansas, where she was a proud member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

It was during her college years that Laura met the love of her life, Richard Cummings, who was then working toward his medical degree. After Richard’s graduation, the couple embarked on an adventure that took them across the country — to Cimarron, New Mexico; Logan, Utah; New York City; Oklahoma City; and Colorado Springs — before ultimately returning to Wichita, the city Laura had always called home. They were married for 63 devoted years until Richard’s death. Together they raised four children, a family Laura cherished above all.

Laura took quiet pride in her career as a registered nurse. In her leisure, she enjoyed playing bridge and golf, and she had a lifelong passion for KU basketball that could only be described as a calling. A season ticket holder for many years, she and Richard made a tradition of traveling together to the NCAA Tournament whenever the Jayhawks qualified.

Above all, Laura was a woman of steadfast faith. She attended daily Mass and was an active member of the Agatharians, the Serra Club, and altar societies at the various parishes she called home. She served with the Sedgwick County Medical Auxiliary and volunteered for several years at the Spiritual Life Center for the Diocese of Wichita. Her faith was not simply practiced — it was lived.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Ruth; her husband, Richard; her son, John; her granddaughter, Lucy; her sisters, Mary and Sue; and her brother, James.

She is survived by her children, Tom (Lisa), Anne, and Bill (Nika); her brother, Charles; sister, Melissa; her grandchildren, Sally, Ellen, Frank (Katie), Madeline (Matthew), Elizabeth (Danny), John, Brian, George, Joseph, Chris, Bill, Julia, Elena(Logan); eleven great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Catholic Care Center and Good Shepherd Hospice for their compassionate and dedicated care.

Guestbook

  1. Laura was a wonderful woman. My best memories of Laura and Richard are our trips to KU basketball games and being in the back seat of the car with Laura and hearing about her life and family that she cherished. Laura was a beautiful person.
