Lawrence L. Warren, Jr.

lawrence warren, jr.
Larry was the eldest of three sons born to Lawrence Sr. and Ruby (Bally) Warren. He was born in Wichita, Kansas on April 12, 1928 and lived in the family home at 320 East Skinner Street and lived there until his marriage. Larry was preceded in death by both parents and his two brothers; Eugene (Gene) and Jerry Warren. As the eldest son, Larry assumed duties of helping his younger siblings, and was especially helpful in assisting his brother Jerry who had been afflicted by polio. Larry began working at various odd jobs early in his life and consequently developed a high sense of work ethic and pride in his work. He attended and graduated from East High School in Wichita and then attended Friends University where he met Margery Lygrisse. They were married on August 23, 1952. Both Larry and Margery were involved in education throughout their careers. Larry was drafted into the Army midterm while teaching music at Burden, Kansas. He served from October 1953 to August of 1955 and was eventually stationed in Germany. Margery was able to go to Germany during his time of service and that gave them the opportunity to experience a different culture and do some travel in Europe. Following his honorable discharge, Larry returned to teaching and eventually was employed in the Wichita Public School system teaching at various schools. He continued his education gaining a Masters and Specialist Degrees and was certified for Guidance Counseling. He served as a Guidance Counselor at Wichita West High School for the remainder of his career. Larry and Margery grew to really enjoy Colorado, especially the area around Nathrop, and purchased a lot and constructed a prefab cabin on the lot. Larry mastered the skill of building and soon added a storage shed, garage, and then addition to the cabin to make it a full 3 bedroom dwelling. It was there that Larry introduced members of the family to “Jeep trailing” in the mountains and gave those of us who benefited from this many great memories. Later he built a house at rural Towanda, Kansas and then following retirement from teaching sold that home and moved to their Colorado home. They sold that property and moved to Arizona, and then eventually back to Kansas. In March of 2018 Larry and Margery moved into Oxford Villas and it was during this time that Margery passed away on June 13, 2021 and ended almost 69 years of marriage. During their marriage they enjoyed taking cruises and experienced over a dozen cruises in various parts of the world. Their favorite seemed to be an Alaskan cruise as they took 6 cruises there. While they did not have children of their own, they for a time acted as foster parents to two teenage boys. They remained in contact with them for many years. Both Larry and Margery were involved in attending church wherever they lived. Following Margery’s death, Larry had more flex time from his caregiving and became involved in a local Bible Study group. There he revived his faith and became good friends with the members of that group of eight. He was particularly interested in watching the teachings of Dr. David Jeremiah on TV and would sometimes watch his program 3 times a day. He passed in peace and assurance in the early morning of May 2, 2023, following his 95th birthday on April 12.Graveside Service will be at 10:00 am, Friday, May 5, 2023, at Kechi Township Cemetery.
