November 10, 2017
Lenore Strong, 84, died Friday, November 10, 2017. Memorial Service will be at 2:00 P.M., Friday, November 17, 2017, at East Heights United Methodist Church. Loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She grew up in Clay Center and Topeka, graduating from Topeka High. She then went on to study Interior Design at the University of Kansas where she lived in the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. After college she lived a few years in New York City, where she worked at Dale Carnegie.
She came back to Wichita, met and married E.W. (Si) Strong. They had two children. After being widowed she married D.L. Winfrey, who had also been widowed and had a daughter. Together they successfully blended their families. To be part of her family you did not have to be blood related. Her passion was her family, but her favorite role was Grandmother. There was nothing too big or too small for her to do for her grandchildren. She loved going to their various sporting events, music and band concerts, and theatre. To her every interaction with them was precious.
She loved to laugh, sing, and dance. In her younger days she would occasionally stand on her head and would ask you to join her. She loved being with people, having good friends, and being a good friend.
She was also passionate about helping others. She volunteered for numerous charities including the Institute of Logopedics (now known as Heartsprings), Casa Roots and Wings, Campfire troop leader, PTO, Wichita City Library as the "story lady" and as a reading tutor at the Goddard grade school. She was a member of Petroleum Wives, Junior League, Theatre Guild, Goddard Womens club and East Heights UMC.
Preceded in death by her husbands, Earl Wayne “Si” Strong, Darry L. Winfrey. Survived by her children, Scott (Genelle) Strong, Susan Strong, Sharon (Troy) Hantla; grandchildren, Erika, Evan, Morgan, Luke, Camille, Drew, Nathan; great-grandchildren, Asher, Kate. A memorial has been established with: Heartspring, 8700 E. 29th St. N., Wichita, KS 67226. Downing & Lahey Mortuary - East Chapel.
