Leo Joseph Anderson, Sr.

Anderson, Leo Joseph Sr., age 91, died December 12, 2012. He was born August 15, 1921, on a farm near Lecompton KS, son of Helen OBrien and Michael Anderson. He rode his pony to rural schools in Douglas County, and graduated from Lawrence High School. He attended the University of Kansas, both before and after World War II. He served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers in France and Germany for over four years, attaining the rank of Captain. He married Henrietta Slavens in 1943. She preceded him in death, as did their daughter, Kathleen A. Finn. He is survived by one son, Leo J. Anderson II of Wichita; four grandsons, Robert Anderson, Mark Anderson, Christopher Finn and Daniel Finn; and three great-grandchildren. He worked as an electrical engineer on the construction of Ft. Randall Dam, SD; Chief Engineer of Strategic Air Command, Omaha NE; Director of Facilities, U.S. Postal Service regional office in Wichita; and Director of Design for the U.S. Postal Service, Washington DC, until retiring from government service in 1971. He established the engineering firm Mechanized Systems Designs in 1975. He started hunting as a boy on the family farm, and remained an avid hunter until late in life. Leo and Henrietta enjoyed life in San Diego from 1975 until 1994, when they relocated to Olathe to be near family. Since her death in 2010, he has lived in Wichita. The family will hold a private service at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Wichita. They request no flowers.
