Leon J. Greene

Leon J. Greene passed away peacefully at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice on March 22, 2021. Leon was born to parents Charles and Carolyn Greene in his aunt’s home on North Topeka Street in Wichita. He graduated from Wichita East High School and Wichita University. Leon was a WWII veteran, serving in Italy as an automatic rifleman in the 91st Infantry Division. He was awarded a Combat Infantry Badge, a Bronze Star for meritorious service, and the European Theater of Operations Campaign ribbon with two bronze stars for the Apennines and Po Valley campaigns. Leon’s first full-time employer was Stearman Aircraft, followed by Boeing, IBM, Union National Bank, Kansas State Bank, and Fourth National Bank. He served on the Boards of the Urban League of Wichita, Goodwill Industries, the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and Junior Achievement. He was a past president of the Urban League and Goodwill Industries. He served on Kansas Governor Docking’s Technical Advisory Committee for the State’s Information and Communications System and on the Automation Committee of the American Bankers Association. He was chairman of the automation committee advising USD 259 during its period of computerizing data. Leon was a member of University Congregational Church and is survived by Kay Sommerfeld, his life partner for 20 years. One of the kindest gentlemen it has ever been my privilege to know. Knew him as a boss, a friend and as a fellow board member at Goodwill. Always had a deep concern for people. We have lost a truly good man.
