Smith, Margie E., 91, homemaker and volunteer, died Thursday, July 10, 2014. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 P.M., Monday, July 14, 2014, at Downing Lahey Mortuary East. Funeral Service will be at 3:00 P.M., Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 7404 E. Killarney Place, Wichita, KS. Entombment Service will be at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 15, 2014, at Lakeview Cemetery, 12100 E. 13th Street N., Wichita, KS. Margie was born July 4, 1923 in Danville, KY. She married John Smith in 1945 and moved to WV. In 1969 John and Margie moved to Wichita, KS and soon opened Homestead Furniture at Kellogg and Woodlawn. Margie served as a member of St. Stephens Alter Guild, Daughters of The King, Order of Eastern Star, various Hospice organizations, Wesley Medical Center Volunteer, Starkey Action Council, YWCA Discover Shop, and Crestview Country Club. Margie began her volunteer services at the age of 14 and continued volunteering for more than 75 years. In 2007 Margie received the Frist Humanitarian Award for her years of volunteer work. Margie is preceded in death by her husband, John “Jack” Smith; daughter, Barbara Anne (Smith) Evans; brothers, Earl and Chester Eiford; sisters, Naomi Eiford Chilton and Jean Eiford Humkey; parents, Charles Eiford and Nora Burton Eiford. Survivors: daughters, Linda Pond (Larry) of El Dorado, KS and Jacquelyn Johnson (Sammy) of Bristol, TN; special son-in-law, David Evans (Barbara) of Wichita, KS; grandchildren, Jeff Johnson (Kathy), Michelle McLellan (John), Matthew Wineman, Brian Pond (Lena), Stephanie Ward (Christopher), Steven Pond (Ari), Lisa Miller (Erik), David Evans, Jr (Nova); many great-grandchildren who fondly referred to her as GG. The family would like to thank Interim Hospice and the staff of The Regent Senior Living Residence for their loving care and support. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with Interim Healthcare/Hospice, 333 S. Broadway #200, Wichita, KS 67202 and St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 7404 E. Killarney Pl., Wichita, KS 67206.
