Celebrating the life of Maria Nicolasa Schmidt, affectionately known as Nico, who passed away peacefully in Wichita, KS on Saturday, September 6, 2025. Born on May 1, 1922, Maria lived a life marked by devotion to her faith, family and community.

Maria was the beloved mother to Carmen Campos and stepmother to Karen Colley. She was a cherished grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother as well as a loving aunt and sister. Maria’s family was the center of her life, and she embraced her roles with warmth and dedication.

On November 8, 1970, Maria married Albert Schmidt in Haven, KS. Together, they settled into farm life in Mt. Hope, KS, where Maria thrived as a farmer’s wife and homemaker. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her family; she was a caregiver who brought comfort and support to many.

Professionally, Maria was talented and industrious. She worked as a welder at both Cessna Aircraft and Boeing, and as a seamstress at Model Laundry. However, she often said that her greatest job was caring for her home and family.

Maria had a variety of hobbies that brought joy to her and those around her. She had a passion for sewing, crocheting, needlepoint, and quilting, and she also enjoyed canning foods. Her unwavering faith and nurturing way with children remain her enduring legacy.

Maria is survived by her daughter, Carmen Campos; step-daughter, Karen Colley; grandchildren, Nicole (Kristian) Carter, Justin Campos, Marisa (Nick) Wilson, Alyssa Campos, Keith (Jamie) Schmidt, Todd (Judy) Schmidt, Chad (Angela) Schmidt, Jeremy Schmidt, and Kevin Colley. She was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-grandchild. Additionally, she leaves behind her brothers, Tony Mora and Joe Mora and many nieces and nephews that were a vital part of her life.

Maria was preceded in death by her parents, Trinidad and Teresa Mora; her husband, Albert Schmidt; siblings, Guadalupe, Alex, Marina, Concha, Linda, Carlos and Sally; and step-son, Larry Schmidt.

Rosary will be at 7:00 pm, Friday, September 12, 2025; Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Christ the King Catholic Church.
