Maribel "Mickey" Leiter, 89, died comfortably on October 8 after a year-long battle with cancer. The daughter of Dr. Graham and Gladys Asher was raised in Kansas City where she attended The Barstow School, and then Pine Manor College (MA) and Bennington College (VT). Mickey married John Adams Prescott Leiter in 1951; they moved to Wichita in 1973. Mickey fell in love with ice skating in her teens and turned that love into a career as a judge. She was the first national figure skating judge from Kansas and, in 2012, was recognized by the United States Figures Skating Assoc. for 50 years of judging. The second woman in the U.S. to be appointed a competition referee, she again was recognized by the USFSA in 2017 for 40 years of refereeing. Mickey was an accomplished oil and watercolor painter. One of the founders of Wichitas Gallery XII, she was a member of the KS Academy of Oil Painters and KS Watercolor Society. Mickey also was a member of the Junior League (53), Kansas City Country Club and Wichita Country Club. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years and is survived by their children, Scott (Elin), George (Margaret), and Susan. Mickey will be remembered for her willingness to give her time and share her talents. A memorial service is being held at 3 p.m., Monday, October 16 at Larksfield Place, 7373 E. 29th St. N. Wichita, KS 67226. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Wichita Childrens Home, 7271 E. 37th St. N., Wichita 67226.
