Marixsa "Rixy" Dawn Alvarez

March 9, 1995 ~ December 30, 2022
Marixsa Dawn Alvarez, 27, of Wichita, KS, passed away on December 30th, 2022 in hospice care after a severe respiratory illness. Marixsa, or "Rixy" as she was affectionately known, was born on March 9th,1995 in Dodge City, KS. A force of strength from birth at only 2 pounds, 9 ounces, Marixsa was flown to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS. There she spent the first five weeks of her life while her mom stayed nearby at the Ronald McDonald House. As a baby she received her first education from Arrowhead West and continued her public education at Dodge City public schools until the age of nine. At that time, Marixsa transitioned to Heartspring in Wichita, KS, which quickly became her home. During her twelve years at Heartspring, Rixy met some of the most exceptional caregivers who became her family. She experienced personal growth, challenges, and great joy as a student and resident there. Her communication skills blossomed and she gained independence in her self-care. She discovered more joys in her life, including music, walking outdoors, and car-ride adventures. Marixsa could often be seen running down the halls while squealing with laughter, or playing with her interactive stuffed animals. At the age of 21, Marixsa transitioned to Starkey in Wichita, KS. This was a time of great adjustment for Marixsa as she learned to live with her adult peers. The staff quickly learned about Marixsa’s superhero strength, idiosyncratic talents, and how to navigate unique situations with Marixsa. In her six years at Starkey, Rixy continued to enjoy outings and experiential opportunities in the community. She loved dogs and enjoyed trips to the Humane Society. The staff who cared for Marixsa brought her happiness by enriching her life with ease, comfort, and love. Rixy was a beautiful, strong, and at times feisty soul, who broke the barriers of this conforming world. She was happiest when cruising on car rides with her mama, whilst cranking up Selena and other Latin music. She had the biggest smiles when she had tamales at her favorite El Salvadorian restaurant and any spicy Mexican food. Her smile was timeless and will be remembered by all who had the honor of experiencing it. Marixsa was preceded in death by her grandfather, Eldon Bergeson and her aunt, Sheryl Bergeson. She is survived by: her mother, Bianca Alvarez; her father, Ovidio Alvarez; her siblings, Trinidad and Shreya Alvarez, Starla Parada, and Natasha Bejarano; her grandmothers, Donna Bergeson and Janet Peters; her grandfather, Charles Rogers; her aunts, Candice and Donelle Bergeson, Kristin Gasser, Kristen and Theresa Rogers; and numerous extended family members. Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of life for Marixsa (details below). When arriving at Heartspring, follow signs for the Conference Center. Donations are being accepted in the "Love for Rixy" GoFundMe to honor Rixy's life and help cover needs related to her end-of-life care and memorial (link below).

Rixy was my first student at Heartspring. Her smile could light up a room and her love of music was evident! She taught me so much about taking time for the little joys. I think of her often and hold her family in sacred space of healing from their loss. ❤️
