Martha Jewell Walcher
Born October 6, 1915. Passed Away February 6, 2017. Jewell was born to Edger and Grace Emma Thompson, Scotland County in Northeast Missouri. In 1933 she came to Wichita with an older sister to attend Business College. She was employed to do secretarial work for the Palmer Oil Office until she married Wayne Walcher in 1940. They went to Champaign, Illinois for Wayne to earn a Masters Degree in Geology. While there Jewell was employed at the State Geological Survey. They returned to Wichita in 1941 where they spent most of their 71 years together. She was employed at the Controllers Office at Wesley Hospital for a short time. Jewell was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, her parents, two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by son, Douglas, of Lawrence, KS; and daughter, Debbie Hoyle (Greg), of Yarrow Point, WA; granddaughters, Kay Koch (Jeff) of McLouth, KS, and Julie (Jim) Ramsey, of Baldwin City, KS; grandsons, Brian Phillips (Brittani) of Charlotte, NC, and Michael Todd Phillips, of Santa Cruz, CA; and six great-grandchildren. Jewell did volunteers work with various community organizations. She and Wayne were members of Plymouth Congregational Church for over 50 years. They served on the Board of Deacons and most of Jewells time was spent working in the church library for many years. Also, she was a P.E.O member and Book Club member. Additionally, much of her time was spent caring for family members and friends. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to: Plymouth Congregational Church, 202 North Clifton Avenue, Wichita, KS 67208; Larksfield Health Center, 2828 N. Governeour, Wichita, KS 67226; or Wichita Childrens Home, 7271 E. 37th St. N., Wichita, KS 67226. Memorial Service on Friday April 28th at 11:00 a.m., Downing & Lahey Mortuary, 6555 East Central, Wichita.
