Mary Elena Pando, 86, retired Licensed Practical Nurse, passed away Sunday, March 22, 2026.
Mary received her LPN degree in 1973 and began her nursing career at St. Francis Hospital, where she worked as a surgical nurse from 1973 to 1975. She then served as an office nurse for Dr. Ernest Tippin from 1975 to 1988. After taking a year off, Mary continued her nursing career at the VA Hospital, where she worked until her retirement in 2009. Throughout her career, she received numerous awards and acknowledgements for her dedication to patient care. She believed strongly in providing patients with the highest quality care and took great pride in her work.
Mary was married to Octavio for nearly 50 years. They enjoyed traveling together, visiting the casino, and dining out at restaurants. After retirement, they took great care of one another and shared a love for their beloved dog, Freddy, who brought them both comfort and companionship and remained close to their hearts after his passing.
Mary was also a devoted and loving mother who raised six daughters with love and dedication. In her retirement, she cherished spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her immense joy.
She enjoyed playing bingo, visiting the casino, traveling, and especially loved going to the beach, where she found peace watching the ocean. Mary was also an avid reader and enjoyed watching true crime dramas.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Alfredo Reyes, Sr. and Beatrice Reyes and her brothers, Alfred Reyes and Raymond Reyes.
She is survived by her husband, Octavio J. Pando; daughters, Lara Pando, Angie (Mark) Ballenger, Becky (Michael) Yeiter, Vicky Garcia, Veronica Alcorn, and Helen Faber; brothers, Mike Reyes (Frances) and Erasmo Reyes (Nancy); sister, Josephina Marsh (Paul); and an abundance of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 South Market, Wichita, KS 67202.
