Celebrating the life of Mary Jane Motes, affectionately known as Mae, who passed away surrounded by family in Wichita, KS on Thursday, May 21, 2026. Born on January 9, 1944, in Granite City, Illinois, Mae was a beacon of caring, love, beauty, and resolute stubbornness throughout her vibrant life.

Mae dedicated her life to her family as a homemaker, nurturing a beautiful home filled with warmth and poetry. An ardent fan of “Young and the Restless,” Mae’s determination ensured she never missed an episode, and her passion led her to collect signatures from most of the cast members. Beyond the screen, she composed countless beautiful poems, sharing her works with everyone and delighting in the publication of one of her pieces. Above all, her heart belonged to her “boys,” her cherished dogs, who were her constant companions and greatest joy.

Mae’s legacy continues through her extensive and loving family. She is survived by her daughters, Anne Marie Shepphard and Angela Christine (James) Dietrich; sons, William Alan Gilbreath and Rick Alan Motes. Her joy was further multiplied by her grandchildren, James Moser, Nathaniel Bailey, Jesse Bailey, Shayne (Kimberly) Dietrich, Luke (Caitlyn) Coffey, Crystal Lynn (James) Cyphers, Dexter Dietrich, Shawn Dietrich, David Crothers, and Jamie Crothers; along with her great-grandchildren, Brianna Cyphers, Brooke Cyphers, Bailey Cyphers, Maverick Dietrich, Genevieve Coffey, Gwendolyn Bailey, Zander Crothers, Gage Crothers, James Shepphard, Brandy Shepphard, Bobby Motes, Taylor Gamblin, and Aleighnna Gamblin.

Preceded in death by her parents, Scott Howard, and Betty Jane Debow, and her great-grandchild, Austin Crothers, Mae leaves behind a community enriched by her presence.

Memorial contributions in honor of Mae can be directed towards Angela Dietrich, who will ensure they serve a purpose befitting Mae’s memory.

Mae’s life, marked by deep love and a stubborn perseverance, will be forever cherished and remembered by all who knew her.
