Mary Joan Becker

Mary Joan Becker, 92, died Tuesday, January 11, 2022, after a long and well lived life. Joan was born November 14, 1929 to Philip and Agnes (VanLeeuwen) Devine. She married Robert (Bernie) Becker on November 5, 1949. They lived in Walnut, Kansas for a few years before moving to Wichita. Joan retired from St. Joseph Hospital after many years in the business office. Joan loved trying new recipes and reading. She read newspapers, magazines, and romance novels that the grandkids called "Grandma's porn". She also loved early mornings drinking coffee on the deck of the house on Eureka Lake with Bernie. She loved people watching and would strike up a conversation with anyone. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Philip and Agnes Devine; husband, Robert (Bernie) Becker; daughter, Jane Becker; brother, Francis Devine. Survived by her daughters, Mary Ann Shirley of Eureka, KS; Roberta Becker of Wichita; Carol Miller of Wichita; Connie Vonfeldt of Eureka, KS; son, Robert Becker of Wichita; grandchildren, Richard Shirley, Michael Shirley, Christy Friesen, Danielle Becker, Brian Miller, Dr. Joann Ivy, Dr. Jacob Vonfeldt, and Jacqueline Vonfeldt; six great grandchildren; sisters, Teresa Sisk and Christine Patterson. Visitation will be at Downing & Lahey West Mortuary on Sunday, January 16, 2022 at 4:00 pm. The Rosary will be immediately following at 5:00 pm. The Funeral Mass will be on Monday, January 17, 2022 at 11:00 am at St. Jude Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass will be lived streamed at www.stjudewichita.org Joan always said she would prefer to have Masses said for her in lieu of flowers.
