Mary Kay (Scott) Gartland of Wichita, KS passed away at the age of 68 on Friday, July 1, 2022. Mary was a daughter, sister, aunt, friend, loving mother, and proud grandmother. She graduated high school from Southeast High and pursued college classes at Wichita State University. From early on in her life Mary had a passion for animals and would frequently bring home anything with a heart and soul including mice, guinea pigs, and sickly cats. You could even find her loving on the wild horses and mules in the field behind her home. More than anything, except her sons, she loved her poodles and spent many years training, grooming, and occasionally showing them at local events. Her compassion resulted in a lifetime of caring and advocating for animals including her involvement in policy changes regarding the overvaccination of small animals. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Orin Wayne and Betty Ruth (Parcher) Scott. Survived by her sons, Brian (Tia Hill) Gartland of Wichita, Tim Gartland of El Dorado, KS; grandson, Christian Gartland of Norwich, KS; brother, Steven (Dorcas) Scott; sisters, Karen Northrop, Leslie (Ben) Bolte; nieces and nephews, Brad (Marni) Scott, Jessica Horn, Zach Scott, Eric (Jessica) Northrop, Thomas (Elena) Northrop, Taylor Bolte (deceased), Connor Bolte, Lillian Bolte; and was blessed with 8 great-nephews and nieces. A Memorial Service for Mary will be held at Downing & Lahey East Chapel at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 9. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to Victory in the Valley in support of cancer patients and survivors like Mary Gartland.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. To Brian and Tia, all of us here at Spirit are very sorry to hear of your loss. We will remember you in our thoughts and in our prayers. May Mary find eternal peace in heaven and you comfort in your memories.

  2. I met Mary in 1964 when my family moved into the house next door to the Scotts. She and I became friends right away, walking to Kos Harris school together. We liked animals and raised several generations of hamsters. Once we invited all the neighborhood kids and their pets over to her back yard for games. And we visited the horses in the polo field across the fence. Mary was always kind and gentle. Her serious health problems in later years never kept her from caring about other people and how they were feeling. I will miss her.

  3. Mary was one of the sweetest and kindest person I will ever know. I will miss talking to her about animals and life in general. I know she loved her new dog Ella and she was kind to take her and give her a great new life. Mary is greatly missed forever!!! Her sons and grandson and her daughter in law seem to be very loving and considerate people also, a good reflection of Mary. She had great people around her that loved her very much. So sad for the loss of such a nice person 💔 Rest In Peace now with no pain good friend 🐩. Paula
