Michael Joseph Schrant, 69, went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 15, 2022 after a valiant fight with brain cancer.Michael was born on November 8th, 1953 in Great Bend, Kansas to Vernon and Armella (Wasinger) Schrant. As a child Mike was described as ornery, often being in trouble and having to go ride with his dad to do work to stay out of trouble. When he was extra ornery, he got sent to Grandpa and Grandma’s house for a week. He was also the organizer of his siblings, always having a game plan for them. He attended Cunningham High School, and was a very involved student, and skilled athlete. He graduated in 1972, and went on to continue his education at Pratt Community College, and then earned his bachelor’s degree in Education at Fort Hays State University. Education was very important to Mike, and he eventually went on to get two master’s degrees, one at Fort State Hays State and the other at Newman University. Mike started his teaching career at Eskridge, Kansas and that is where he met the love of his life, Adel. They were married on June 7,1980. To this union were born 3 amazing boys, William “Bill,” James “Jim,” and Matthew “Matt.” Mike's wife, children, and family were his top priority. He showed them love and dedication until his last days. His career and service to others was also important to him. Throughout his life he served others in many roles-teacher, administrator, journalist, etc.Perhaps Mike's greatest joy in life was seeing and spending time with his 8 grandchildren: Jordan, James, Ember, Addison, Jacob, John Jon, Hunter, and Eli. He left an impact on everybody he came into contact with, and while he will be missed terribly, his legacy will live on through his children and grandchildren.Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Armella. He is survived by his father, Vernon Schrant of Anthony, KS; wife, Adel Schrant of Sylvan Grove, KS; sons, Bill (Tasha) Schrant of Wichita, Jim (Chelsea) Schrant of Tonganoxie, KS, Matt (Savannah) Schrant of Arkansas City, KS; grandchildren, Jordan, James, Ember, Addison, Jacob, John Jon, Hunter, and Eli. He is also survived by his siblings, Terry (Pam) Schrant, Tim (Lisa) Schrant, Debbie (George) Barnes, both of Wichita, KS, Sue (Brian) Meyer of Winfield, KS, Sandy Schrant of Wichita, Patrick (Kimberly) Schrant of Harper, KS, Tom (Tanja) Schrant of Wichita, KS, and Kelly (Rebecca) Schrant of Columbus, NE.Visitation will be from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at Downing & Lahey East Mortuary. 1. Mr. Schrant was an amazing mentor and teacher. I learned many life lessons, and history from him. Also how to think about the next chess move, and how you have to think two or more steps ahead. He loved talking about his wife, children, and grandchildren. Prayers to the family. He will be dearly missed.

  8. I am so sorry to hear of Mike’s passing. He will always be “Mr. Schrant” to me. He left an impression on all those that he taught. I also enjoyed seeing him around town when he worked at the radio station. Sending thoughts and prayers to you all! Katie (Pruitt) Schroeder, St. John’s Class of 2001

  9. My condolences to Mr. Schrant’s family, he was such a great person and I was fortunate to have him as our principal at St Xavier during my time there until I graduated in 2003.

  10. I met Mike about three years ago when he came to our Senior Center looking for activities with others while enjoying his retirement. Mike created an evening of cornhole with other seniors. It was enjoyed by all and everyone looked forward to the evening each week of competition. Mike would see me at my warehouse and he and Jack, his dog, would walk over for to talk about the Renovation Project of the new location of our Senior Center. He was so looking forward for the larger Center for the many activities it would provide.
During his time of dealing with his cancer, he asked me to take care of Jack. I considered it an honor to feed and watch over Mike’s dog. I knew what Jack meant to him. So thanks Mike, for being that friend, of whom I shared many a conversation with.
To the family, your loss may seem
at times unbearable, but may in time may you find comfort of all the memories you have shared .
Mike may perpetual light shine upon you and may you rest in peace.
    Mike Kratky

  11. Mike was Principal at St. Xavier’s High School when I was beginning my teaching career there. He was a very caring person and poured his heart into the school. I cherish the opportunity I had in coaching his son, Bill in basketball. I taught with Adel as well, and they were both all about serving others. Bill, I still often reminisce about those days of you and your teammates getting Ram basketball the recognition it deserved. Your entire family will be in my prayers!!!

    Love, Coach Shelton and family

  12. Coach Schrant taught me the game of basketball when I was in junior high school at St. John’s in Beloit, Kansas. He was a tough coach in that he wanted us to play hard and hustle.

I recall an awards ceremony where he was provided the gift of a bench seat with a seat belt attached to it. Coach had quite a time sitting on the bench when we were not playing as he thought we could. He coached tough because he cared. He wanted us to be better and knew we had it in us to achieve more.

Coach Schrant was also a good teacher and mentor. He took the time to get to know his students and helped them understand the lessons of life.

My thoughts and prayers are with Coach and his family during this difficult time. Good thing he never used the seat belt bench, as now he can rise to his heavenly home.

May perpetual light shine upon him and may the grace of God unite him with the saints and angels.

  13. I got to know Mike quite well when he worked at KDNS radio station in Glen Elder. He was a good friend and always enjoyed my many conversations with him. My condolences to his family.
